Nintendo's preorder for the Switch 2 won't include an OLED screen, but a version with OLED technology could still be a possibility. According to a new report from Bloomberg, Nintendo has contacted Samsung Electronics Co. to manufacture chips for the Switch 2, aiming to enhance production speed and potentially surpass its sales targets by March 2026.

The demand for the Nintendo Switch 2 has been nearly unprecedented in Japan, causing Nintendo to apologize for having to limit pre-orders. Approximately 2.2 million individuals requested a preorder in Japan alone, while preorder figures for Europe and North America have not been disclosed. However, the rapid sellout of pre-orders suggests a strong global demand.

Nintendo anticipates selling between 15 and 20 million units by March 2026, surpassing its initial intention to match the Nintendo Switch’s first ten months sales of 15 million. While additional challenges such as supply chain issues and tariff concerns have arisen, the gaming giant does not foresee a significant impact on overall sales.

Samsung has previously supplied both flash memory and OLED screens for the original Nintendo Switch, so this partnership is not new. The original Switch utilized chips made at TSMC, while the Switch 2 will feature an Nvidia-based chipset. Samsung's manufacturing techniques are better suited for this type of chip, allowing Nintendo to avoid competition with other companies at TSMC for production capacity, thus increasing the likelihood of fulfilling demand.

Should you wait to purchase a Nintendo Switch 2? Perhaps, but it’s not a certainty. An OLED upgrade would be beneficial, but it is not assured and may not even be necessary. The Nintendo Switch 2 has an LCD screen and significantly improved frame rates that approach the OLED experience, as noted in our hands-on review.

The console also offers ray-tracing and variable refresh rates to help bridge the gap between LCD and OLED displays, and its use of DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) ensures a smooth and steady frame rate.

Nintendo Switch 2 Questions with Giovanni Colantonio

A few weeks ago, we shared our initial impressions of the Nintendo Switch 2 after attending its first hands-on event, where I played around 11 games. I'm here to respond to your most pressing questions.

Question from @kennethcheung4938: We haven’t encountered much of the new OS yet—does it resemble the original Switch OS, or is it entirely revamped? If it is the latter, will we still have the ability to play games from outside our region? For instance, if I own a U.S. Switch, can I buy physical game cartridges in Japan and play them in English?

The Nintendo Switch 2’s launch lineup has been enhanced with exciting titles for Sega fans, including Sonic X Shadow Generations, Yakuza 0 Director's Cut, and Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S, all set for a June 5 release. Preorders for these titles (and others) begin April 24, and each of the three games has been improved to provide added value for Nintendo Switch 2 players.

Sonic X Shadow Generations features enhanced graphics and gameplay, along with a total remaster of Sonic Generations that includes bonus content. It is particularly appealing for fans of the Sonic franchise, showcasing why Shadow is regarded as the "ultimate lifeform." The game can be preordered for $50 starting tomorrow.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows has reportedly been rated for the Nintendo Switch 2

The Pan European Game Information website, known as PEGI, has rated Assassin's Creed Shadows for the Nintendo Switch 2, indicating that the game could be available for the console either at or after its June 5 launch. However, it is also possible that this is simply an error on the website, and Ubisoft may not plan to port the game to the Switch 2; therefore, this information should be taken with caution.

PEGI functions similarly to the ESRB in the U.S., providing age recommendations for games. While the specific page for Assassin's Creed Shadows does not list the Nintendo Switch 2, it appears in the "Most Searched Games" section.
