Huawei unveils MateBook Fold with a folding screen
Huawei has released its first folding laptop, the MateBook Fold Ultimate Design, and has already opened a pre—order for the device. This is one of the company's most ambitious innovations: the gadget has a huge flexible screen, runs on its own HarmonyOS 5 operating system and is equipped with a chip of its own production.
The main feature of the MateBook Fold is the folding OLED display. When unfolded, its diagonal is 18 inches, and when folded, it is 13 inches. The resolution is 3.3K, and the aspect ratio changes from 4:3 to 3:2 depending on the position. Huawei claims that this is the world's largest folding dual-layer OLED panel installed in a laptop.
The device weighs only 1.16 kg and is equipped with a built-in stand, which makes it convenient to work in an "open" format. The kit includes an external keyboard, a charger and a protective case.
Performance and filling
The MateBook Fold runs on a proprietary Kirin X90 chipset, and also received 32 GB of RAM and a 1 or 2 TB SSD drive. A battery with a capacity of almost 75 Wh is responsible for the autonomy. There is support for Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2, and two USB—C 3.2 connectors for connection.
It is noteworthy that Huawei did not disclose the technical details of the Kirin X90 chip, citing the high cost of production as the reason for the relatively expensive price of the device. The basic version of the laptop costs 23,999 yuan (approximately $3,328).
HarmonyOS instead of Windows
The MateBook Fold and the updated MateBook Pro model became Huawei's first laptops running on HarmonyOS 5, an OS that the company has been developing since 2015 and first introduced into smartphones in 2019. Now HarmonyOS is also entering the computer market, aiming to compete with Windows and macOS.Image: Huawei Press Office
The system currently supports more than 150 applications, including the WPS Office suite and the popular Chinese photo processing application Meitu Xiuxiu. Huawei claims that HarmonyOS is already installed on more than a billion devices worldwide, and more than 7 million developers are working on applications for it.
Consider this a response to the US sanctions.
Huawei has been actively developing its technology since the United States imposed sanctions in 2019, restricting the Chinese company's access to American chips and software. This prompted the company to create its own processors and operating systems. Yu Chengdong, head of Huawei's consumer division, said, "The HarmonyOS laptop gives the world a new choice," adding that the company "continues to take difficult but important steps."
Meanwhile, TECNO has officially announced a new line of CAMON 40 smartphones. The key innovation is TECNO AI's own artificial intelligence platform and Ella voice assistant, adapted to the Russian market. The new devices have also received integration with Yandex services: Yandex Go, Yandex Maps and Yandex Food.
