Do you remember the evenings at the club when you asked a DJ to play a particular song, only to have your friends get annoyed at you for it? Spotify has revealed that Spotify DJ will now accept your song requests just like a real DJ, but in the comfort of your own home, car, or gym, without any judgment from others.

According to a press release issued on Tuesday, the music streaming platform shared that Spotify DJ will take song requests using just your voice, similar to how Alexa or Siri function, but only for Premium subscribers. Beyond merely accepting specific song requests, Spotify DJ will also provide song suggestions based on your preferred genre, mood, artist, or the activity you’re currently engaged in. For instance, if you say, “Play me some early 2000s songs,” it might play tracks from 50 Cent, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, or Evanescence. If you're preparing for a music festival, you can say, “Play me some house music to get me energized for Coachella.”

Xavier Jernigan, the voice of Spotify DJ, also known as DJ X, shared a video on X, previously Twitter, to explain how the new voice request feature works. It’s quite unusual since he’s essentially speaking to himself, but it's definitely worth watching.

For a more thorough explanation of how to request music from Spotify DJ, you can navigate to the search tab on Spotify, click on the DJ playlist, and it will begin playing music while offering commentary based on your recent listening habits. To change the track or the overall vibe, press and hold the DJ button located at the bottom right of the screen until you hear a beep, then request the type of music you want to listen to at that moment.

The vocal request feature for Spotify DJ is now accessible for Premium users in over 60 countries.
