Samsung DeX might receive a redesign influenced by the desktop mode of Android 16.
Samsung may be gearing up for a redesign of its desktop mode, as indicated by leaks from the One UI 8 beta. This redesign could align with updates to Android 16's desktop mode.
For many years, Samsung has provided a desktop mode on its phones and tablets, known as Samsung DeX (short for desktop experience). This feature allows users to connect their phones to a monitor or TV to use it like a desktop computer, providing access to all apps and services, and enabling work on a larger display with a keyboard and mouse.
Samsung tablets also support this mode, either when a keyboard is connected or directly on the tablet itself.
The leaks from DevOfIpos on X showcase early screenshots of One UI 8. One notable similarity to the recently shared Android 16 desktop mode is a fixed taskbar at the bottom featuring centralized and pinned apps, an apps tray, and navigation buttons on the toolbar. Status icons in DeX appear on the right side of the taskbar, contrasting with Android 16's design, which places them at the top.
In this iteration, Samsung DeX resembles a Windows setup, including a search option located on the taskbar. The search functionality seems to encompass apps, app content, and files stored locally, though it does not appear to extend to a broader Google search.
The quick settings feature, which appears user-friendly and clickable, is also visible. Additionally, several apps are displayed in windows, which is an appealing aspect of desktop modes, allowing users to multitask without constantly switching between apps.
These developments signal a growing commitment by Android to enhance desktop modes. Previous indications were seen on the Pixel Tablet, but it seems that Android smartphones could also offer a more robust desktop experience when linked to a monitor, potentially influencing future changes in Samsung DeX.
Despite Samsung DeX being well-established, it is logical for Samsung to build upon Google’s advancements within core Android where opportunities arise.
Android 16 is currently in the works, with more information expected to surface in the coming weeks leading up to Google I/O and The Android Show I/O Edition. Meanwhile, Samsung's One UI 8 development may coincide with the launch of Android 16, likely around the arrival of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 in summer 2025.
This all suggests that a superior desktop experience may be on the horizon for all Android phone users this year.
