Google is currently trialing a YouTube Premium subscription tier aimed at pairs, particularly for couples in India, France, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

The company announced on Monday, via the financial publication MoneyControl, that it is testing this new YouTube Premium tier. This option will allow two individuals within the same Google family group to enjoy the full benefits of YouTube Premium, including an ad-free experience, at a more economical rate than what they would pay if they each had individual accounts or belonged to a five-person family plan.

In India, the monthly fee for the two-person YouTube Premium tier is Rs 219, whereas the family plan is priced at Rs 299. This is roughly equivalent to $2.60 USD and $3.55 USD, respectively, which may not be entirely useful for comparison. While the current family tier costs $22.99 monthly in the U.S., the two-person tier would likely be around $16 a month if it is introduced there.

YouTube stated that the testing of this two-person YouTube Premium tier aims to broaden subscription offerings for users at an appealing price point. This comes on the heels of a recent price increase for many YouTube Premium subscribers after years of lower rates. Individual plans rose from $11.99 to $13.99 per month, annual plans saw an increase from $119.99 to $139.99, and the student plan went up from $6.99 to $7.99 monthly. The student plan is priced similarly to YouTube Premium Lite, which was launched in March.

The two-person YouTube Premium tier not only caters to couples but also benefits college roommates, friends, and single parents with teens, enabling them to share costs and help those who might struggle to afford their own Premium subscriptions. The timeline for its rollout in the U.S. remains uncertain, as testing is only just beginning in the specified countries.

Hulu + Live TV vs. YouTube TV: Choosing the right live-streaming service

If you're struggling to decide on the ideal live TV streaming service for your preferences, you're not alone — there are more options available today than ever before. Whether you need a vast on-demand content library or a dependable live TV streaming service, there are numerous solid alternatives to consider.

YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV are two popular selections noted for their reasonable pricing, comparable features, and robust channel selections. But which one should you ultimately choose?

YouTube updates aimed at enhancing your viewing experience

There are countless ways Google could enhance YouTube across all platforms. Recently, the company revealed several updates aimed at improving how you watch content on mobile devices, computers, and TVs. These updates concentrate on playlists, interactivity, playback speed, and importantly, a feature that prevents you from waking up at 4 a.m. with Mr. Beast still on your screen.

According to Google, over two dozen enhancements are in the pipeline. Here’s a brief overview of the most significant updates coming soon:

The sleep timer available for all

The sleep timer feature is moving from YouTube Premium to become accessible to everyone on mobile devices. As the name suggests, it allows you to set a time for YouTube to stop playing. There are several options for the sleep timer — possibly too many — allowing you to choose for videos to stop after 10, 15, 20, 30, 45 minutes, or 1 hour, or when the current video ends.

Testing the Google Home panel and AI art on Chromecast

If you have a Chromecast with Google TV and have been enviously observing the capabilities of the Google TV Streamer, which includes accessing camera feeds and controlling temperature and lights, you can now join in. Additionally, you can utilize custom AI-generated art for screensavers. To access this, you'll first need to enable the "Public Preview" function in Google Home (taking just a few clicks in the app or on the website) and wait for it to activate.

It appears this is a server-side feature — my Chromecast didn’t require an extra system update aside from the one I received earlier this week. Once activated, you will see Google Home as a choice in the notification menu, offering the same two options as the Google TV Streamer: enabling the home panel and activating doorbell notifications on your TV.
