Four characteristics that Gemini and ChatGPT could benefit from adopting from one another.
Gemini Advanced and ChatGPT are currently two of the most powerful AI assistants available, and both have truly impressed me. However, after months of using them simultaneously, it's evident that each has shortcomings that the other addresses. Some features are so beneficial that it’s hard to believe they aren’t standard across both platforms. If Gemini and ChatGPT could incorporate the best elements from each other, they would be nearly flawless.
I have personally faced both their advantages and limitations. For instance, whenever ChatGPT is unavailable, Gemini Advanced has consistently come through for me. On the flip side, when I request ChatGPT to generate an image with DALLE-3, the result is often far superior to what Gemini Advanced produces with Imagen 3. Through extensive real-world testing, certain essential features have become quite clear.
1. Gemini’s integration with the Google ecosystem simplifies tasks
One aspect I've come to value about Gemini Advanced is its seamless compatibility with Google applications. I can send content directly to Google Docs or Sheets without the need for copy-pasting—something I frequently wish ChatGPT could do to streamline my work.
With most of my tasks already functioning through Google Workspace, this feature saves me substantial time. ChatGPT lacks such a direct connection and doesn’t provide an easy option to transfer content to Docs or Word. The convenience becomes even more significant when dealing with extensive text. By clicking the “Export to Docs” button in Gemini, everything works smoothly, allowing me to proceed directly to Docs to continue my task.
Gemini Advanced also allows easy access to other Google applications like Photos, Drive, and Gmail through a menu in the top right corner. You can add files to the chat for easy reference while working. Gemini surpasses ChatGPT in video creation with its Veo 2 feature, which can create 8-second videos at 720p resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio. I appreciate that these videos can be downloaded and shared on social media. It would be great to see similar video creation capabilities in ChatGPT soon.
2. ChatGPT’s customizable memory is an essential feature that Gemini lacks
In my experience, AI tools perform significantly better when they retain important information. ChatGPT has the ability to remember previous conversations, recall my name, and remember my preferences for responses. It’s such a relief not to have to repeat myself constantly, making interactions more efficient.
In contrast, Gemini starts from square one each time, which can be quite frustrating. It feels like I’m in the Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore film "50 First Dates." This might work for simple, one-time tasks, but it quickly becomes annoying for more ongoing or complex interactions.
3. Gemini’s extensive context window gives it an advantage over ChatGPT
One immediate observation during my testing of Gemini Advanced was its large context window. With Gemini Advanced, you can select models that handle up to 1 million tokens, allowing it to process lengthy documents, comprehensive content, or even entire codebases all in one go. This is particularly beneficial for tasks requiring thorough analysis or summarization of substantial datasets. Knowing I can manage sizeable text without worrying about token limits is reassuring. A token generally represents a few characters or a short word; it's the measurement used by AI models to gauge and restrict content processing.
Conversely, ChatGPT has a significantly smaller context window. It’s frustrating for free users to have access to only just over four thousand tokens, while Plus and Team users can utilize up to around thirty-three thousand tokens, or 128,000 for Enterprise users. This still falls short of Gemini’s capabilities. However, although ChatGPT has a smaller size, it compensates by managing those limits efficiently. Even as I approach the token limit, I can continue chatting because ChatGPT automatically summarizes or condenses earlier parts of the conversation rather than cutting me off.
4. Web search: Gemini’s deep research capabilities versus ChatGPT’s real-time browsing
It’s a major advantage that Gemini Advanced automatically retrieves web results without requiring me to ask. For instance, when I want to know the top 10 gaming desktops for 2025, it fetches the latest information online rather than relying solely on its internal knowledge.
While ChatGPT can browse the web, I don’t appreciate having to instruct it to do so every time the chat resets. ChatGPT views that as dynamic behavior, which it currently cannot perform. Additionally, I’ve noticed that ChatGPT sometimes needs reminders, and if I forget to ask it to perform a web search, it may provide outdated information. This can be frustrating during work hours when I need the most current updates, making it necessary to take extra time to request a web search. Thankfully, Google is always available for searching.
With Gemini, I can pose my question, and it intuitively understands that I’m seeking current information without any extra effort on my part.
At this point, I can’t settle on just one
