Move over, Wordle: The New York Times has a new puzzle game.

The New York Times has unveiled the next title in its Games catalog following the success of Wordle, and this one focuses on math. Digits challenges players to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers. You can currently play its beta version online for free.

In Digits, players are given a target number to match using six provided numbers; they can add, subtract, multiply, or divide these to get as close to the target as possible. Not all numbers must be utilized, putting your math skills to the test as you combine them to form the correct equations.

If players match the target exactly, they earn a five-star rating, a three-star rating if they are within 10, and a one-star rating for getting within 25 of the target number. Players can also try their hand at five different puzzles featuring progressively larger numbers. I completed today's puzzle and found it to be an enjoyable math-based game that should appeal to those who enjoy brain teasers like Threes or other titles from The New York Times such as Wordle and Spelling Bee.

In an article that introduced Digits and explained the game development process by The New York Times Games team, they mentioned that this free beta will help identify bugs and determine if the game should enter a more active development phase where coding and design finalization will occur. So play Digits while you have the chance, as The New York Times may discontinue the project if it doesn't receive the desired feedback.

Digits' beta can be played for free now on The New York Times Games' website.

If you were on Twitter a year ago, you likely remember the surge of gray, yellow, and green boxes filling your feed. Although Wordle launched in 2021 and gained popularity that December, it became a cultural sensation in early 2022, nearly impossible to avoid unless you muted certain words. It was a rare success story in gaming, one that appealed to a broad audience through its simple elegance.

Wordle's success grew as rapidly as its user base. At the end of January 2022, the New York Times announced the acquisition of the puzzle game from its creator, Josh Wardle, in a low-seven-figure undisclosed deal—a surprising move that nearly overshadowed Sony's announcement of acquiring Destiny 2 developer Bungie just hours earlier. This acquisition sparked concerns among
