Now that apps can redirect users to third-party websites for payment processing, they have the opportunity to avoid the mandatory Apple fees and potentially pass the savings on to consumers.
Apple is now prohibited from restricting developers from guiding users to web-based payment solutions from within their iOS apps.
What distinguishes Stripe from Apple?
At present, Apple compels apps to pay its fees when processing payments. This has changed, allowing everyone to utilize Stripe, which charges a standard fee of 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction.
This fee is significantly lower than Apple's commission of 15-30% on in-app purchases.
Although this may seem considerable, Apple currently manages subscription services, ensuring payment security on behalf of developers.
Switching to Stripe means developers must consider factors such as compliance, managing checkout processes, and handling subscriptions independently.
Stripe can offer more flexibility, increased control for developers, and a wider array of payment options.
However, developers might be hesitant to transition away from the convenience of in-app payments using Apple Pay. Nonetheless, they now have the option to accept Stripe payments outside of that ecosystem if they choose.
