How a $30 accessory transformed my iPad Air into the ideal companion for travel and streaming.

I own an iPad Mini and a 13-inch iPad Air (2025), which are housed in a folio case and a Magic Keyboard, respectively. While the iPad Mini is my preferred and most portable tablet, the combination of the Magic Keyboard and the iPad Air renders the larger device cumbersome for tasks like watching videos and using it as a second screen, accounting for over 50% of my usage. Although I could switch the Magic Keyboard for a folio case to reduce weight, that would restrict me to a single viewing angle and mean giving up a physical keyboard.

This is why I decided to add the Rolling Square Edge Pro Core, which costs $30, to my iPad Air. It has enhanced the portability and usability of my larger tablet without compromising flexibility. Although my usage differs from the intended marketing, I’ll explain how I utilize these two simple accessories to maximize the function of my 13-inch iPad Air.

The Rolling Square Edge Pro Core is an excellent accessory within the Apple ecosystem.

The Edge Pro Core consists of a flippable metal bracket that magnetically attaches to devices. The kit features nano-suction layers and thin metal plates with adhesive backs. After installing the plates, the Pro Core attaches magnetically.

Formally, the Edge Pro Core is promoted as a means to mount your iPad on a MacBook lid for a larger portable display. I used my iPad Mini for that purpose, as mounting a 13-inch iPad Air to my MacBook Air would add excessive weight and could potentially loosen the hinge over time. However, I discovered a different and more beneficial way to integrate the Edge Pro Core into my setup.

By affixing two Pro Cores to my 13-inch iPad Air, my video viewing experience has become significantly better. I still carry the Magic Keyboard for productivity, but for leisure, I can swiftly detach my iPad Air and elevate it using the two Pro Cores as a lightweight, portable kickstand.

This setup provides me with far more viewing angles than a rigid folio case, making it easier to use the iPad Air as a second screen at my desk or as an entertainment device during flights. Best of all, it doesn’t interfere with the magnets of the Magic Keyboard, allowing me to leave the bulky keyboard behind when I only need a kickstand.

      It may not suit everyone.

The only drawback is that you must attach permanent metal stickers to your device. Whether for supporting a tablet or adding accessories to your MacBook, you’ll need to affix a thin metal disc or ring. Not everyone may appreciate having a permanent black sticker on their device.

This works for me since my iPad Air typically stays inside the Magic Keyboard case, making the metal plates largely unnoticeable. However, if you attach the plate directly to your MacBook, you’ll have to accept a black sticker on your laptop’s lid. It’s a trade-off of style for utility.

I also observed another limitation for users of folio cases. When you apply these metal plates to your iPad, you won’t be able to use a magnetic folio case. I highly recommend the Edge Pro Core if you mainly utilize a Magic Keyboard, but if you’re satisfied with your folio case, there’s no immediate need to switch.

On the positive side, the Edge Pro Core is expandable. It supports additional accessories such as Rolling Square’s wireless charger and the Edge Pro Light for providing soft lighting during video calls. Furthermore, you can magnetically attach your iPhone to your MacBook for a comprehensive mobile video conferencing setup. It’s available as the Rolling Square Edge Pro Full Kit or as individual accessories.

Over my six weeks of use, the magnets have proven reliable, securely holding angles of up to about 135 degrees without fear of collapsing. The flip plates also fit comfortably in my travel pouch without adding extra bulk. I appreciate having a kickstand option for my 13-inch screen without having to carry the Magic Keyboard everywhere. If your workflow aligns with mine, the $60 Edge Pro Core tablet kit would make an excellent addition to your setup.
