George Lucas states that there is a valid reason for the way Yoda speaks.

      Over the years since Star Wars emerged as a global sensation, George Lucas has shared numerous insights about the universe he created. However, he occasionally reveals new perspectives that shed light on the choices that have made Star Wars so memorable.

      Ahead of a recent anniversary viewing of The Empire Strikes Back, Lucas reflected on his entire career and took his time before addressing the film he was meant to discuss. According to Variety, when he eventually spoke about Empire, he offered an intriguing explanation for the decision to have Yoda speak in reverse order.

      “Because if you speak regular English, people won’t listen as much,” Lucas responded to moderator Ben Mankiewicz's question. “But if he has an accent or if it’s really hard to grasp what he’s saying, they pay more attention to his words.”

      “He was essentially the philosopher of the movie,” he continued. “I had to devise a way to ensure people actually listened — especially 12-year-olds.”

      While Lucas's Q&A lacked extensive details about the film, he did share the story of how the original Star Wars received minimal studio support. He stated, ‘I’ll do it for $50,000 to write, direct, and produce… But I want the sequels.’ And I sought the rights because I planned to create those films regardless of what happened with this one,” he elaborated. He famously requested the rights to all merchandise related to the films, a choice that ultimately led him to become one of Hollywood's wealthiest figures. Though Lucas may not often discuss Star Wars, at 80 years old, he is free to share whatever he wishes.
