The Berlin-based startup Xayn has undergone a rebranding, now known as "Noxtua," which focuses on being a “sovereign European legal AI” designed for legal professionals.

With its new branding, Noxtua has raised €80.7 million in funding to enhance its AI models and extend its reach into new markets. The primary investor for this funding round was C.H. Beck, one of the oldest publishing companies in Germany. Noxtua plans to utilize the firm's database of over 55 million legal documents to develop a new AI model called Beck-Noxtua.

Beck-Noxtua will be part of Noxtua’s range of AI models, which function similarly to ChatGPT. However, in contrast to general chatbots, all of the company's models are trained on "exclusive high-quality legal data sets that have been carefully selected and labelled by legal experts,” according to Dr. Leif-Nissen Lundbæk, CEO and co-founder, speaking to TNW.

“Noxtua comprehensively understands the subtle distinctions among various legal definitions,” Lundbæk stated. Legal professionals employ the tool to perform legal research and to analyze, review, summarize, translate, and draft legal documents. It is available in multiple languages, with an emphasis on German and English.

      European ‘sovereign AI’

Originally launched in 2017 as Xayn, Noxtua was founded by Lundbæk and co-founder Professor Michael Huth, drawing from research on privacy-focused AI solutions at Oxford University and Imperial College London.

Noxtua's initial product was a mobile search engine centered on data privacy, but it later shifted its focus entirely to legal AI after releasing its first model in collaboration with CMS, Germany’s largest business law firm.

Noxtua positions itself as “Europe’s secure and sovereign legal AI.”

“The geopolitical climate has become quite uncertain, challenging historical norms,” Lundbæk remarked. “In such times, independence, sovereignty, and autonomy gain increasing significance.”

The topic of Europe’s digital sovereignty will be a key focus at the TNW Conference, scheduled for June 19-20 in Amsterdam. Tickets for the event are currently available, and using the code TNWXMEDIA2025 at check-out offers a 30% discount.
