Here's how iOS 19 will transform your AirPods into a Universal Translator.

Since the inception of Star Trek, there has been a sci-fi aspiration for a Universal Translator that enables communication between people, regardless of their native languages. This aspiration may soon be realized with the arrival of iOS 19 and AirPods.
Mark Gurman from Bloomberg indicates that we should anticipate this live translation feature to be introduced with iOS 19, which will be utilized by the AirPods.
At this point, it remains uncertain whether this feature will be available for the current AirPods or if it will debut alongside the upcoming AirPods Pro 3, which are also expected to launch later this year.
What is certain is that users will be able to listen and have live translations provided by Apple while wearing their AirPods.
How does live translation function?
The concept involves the AirPods capturing audio from the environment with far-field microphones, transmitting that sound to a connected iPhone.
The iPhone will then process the spoken content in one language, convert it to the user's native language, and relay the translation through the AirPods in real-time.
Importantly, this feature is said to work in both directions. This means that if the user responds in their own language, the iPhone will translate and vocalize that response in the language of the other person.
In theory, this should allow for a relatively seamless conversation, without the need for either party to comprehend the other's language.
It is still unclear whether this functionality will operate directly on the phone or if an internet connection will be necessary. It is likely that a network connection will be required, so having a reliable internet access to minimize lag will be crucial.
When will live translation be available for AirPods?
Speculations suggest that this live translation feature will be included in the upcoming iOS 19 update. This update is anticipated to be announced and launched during Apple’s standard cycle, likely at WWDC 2025 in June.
