Imagine a scenario where Jim Hopper never progressed beyond season 1 of Stranger Things. For David Harbour, he not only anticipated that Hopper would perish, but he also expected it to happen.

In a recent interview with British GQ, Harbour discussed the upcoming fifth and final season of Stranger Things. Hopper stands out as one of the show's most beloved characters. However, when viewers first meet Hawkins Police Chief Hopper, he is still mourning the loss of his daughter, which plunges him into emotional turmoil. Harbour revealed to GQ that he foresaw a tragic conclusion for his character after just one season.

"Harbour read the scripts and firmly believed that the first season should have concluded with Hopper taking his own life," the profile states. "To him, it was the sole way Hopper could seek forgiveness from his daughter." Hopper not only survived season 1 but also evolved into a father figure for Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown).

In season 3, Harbour faced the death of his character for a second time, this time as Hopper seemingly sacrificed himself to seal the gate to the Upside Down. Though fans later learned through a teaser that Hopper survived the explosion, he was captured by Russian soldiers and taken to a prison camp in Kamchatka.

"I think they were genuinely devoted to the poignancy of that moment of his death," Harbour commented regarding Hopper's survival of the explosion. "It was so powerful that I believe they almost didn’t want him to be alive."

Neither Harbour nor Netflix anticipated the immense success of Stranger Things. The series has turned into a global sensation, making Harbour and his co-stars recognizable names worldwide. Seasons 3 and 4 rank among Netflix’s top 10 most popular English-language TV shows.

The fifth season will be the last for the series and is set to stream later this year on Netflix.
