The Vatican announced on Monday that Pope Francis has passed away at the age of 88. The pope died following a cerebral stroke that led to a coma, which was followed by heart failure.
“At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned home to the Father,” said Cardinal Kevin Farrell in the official Vatican statement. “He taught us to embody the Gospel's values with faithfulness, bravery, and universal love, particularly for the poorest and the marginalized.”
The process to elect the next pope will now commence. In the next 15 to 20 days, the College of Cardinals will gather in Rome to participate in the papal conclave. There are 135 cardinals, and only those under the age of 80 are eligible to vote in the conclave.
The cardinals attending the conclave will take a vow of secrecy and will have no communication with the outside world. They will deliberate in the Sistine Chapel and reside in private quarters in the Domus Marthae Sanctae. The College of Cardinals will conduct up to four ballots each day. A two-thirds majority vote is necessary for a pope to be elected. The ballots are then burned; black smoke indicates a vote that was not conclusive, while white smoke signals the election of a new pope.
The papal election process is depicted in "Conclave," a 2024 thriller based on Richard Harris’ 2016 novel of the same name. Directed by Edward Berger, "Conclave" follows the selection process of a new pope following the current one’s heart attack. Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes), the dean of the College of Cardinals, is tasked with leading the election. When a secret threatens to disrupt the conclave, Cardinal Lawrence must uncover the truth before the group elects the next pope.
