The world is rife with injustice, and we often overlook much of it to navigate life more easily. This is what makes a film like Dark Waters feel particularly striking. Dark Waters centers on a seemingly ordinary subject, yet it unfolds like a conspiracy thriller.
The core mystery of Dark Waters is menacing, but what makes the film truly exceptional is its ability to transform a narrative about the hazards of Teflon into something akin to All the President’s Men. With skillful direction from Todd Haynes and a compelling script, we gain insight into this hazardous material and why DuPont was so eager to hide it. While Dark Waters is not the first film to depict a dedicated attorney championing the cause of the underprivileged, it knows precisely how to subvert expectations.
It features strong performances from Anne Hathaway and Mark Ruffalo.
Mark Ruffalo delivers an impressive performance as the lawyer who feels like he’s losing his grip on reality as he delves deeper into the central conspiracy. Anne Hathaway shines as his wife, portraying a character that could easily be thankless in other films. However, here, she becomes a crucial witness to her husband's turmoil and grows increasingly worried for his safety and that of their family as he uncovers the extent of DuPont’s cover-up for profit.
It concludes on a triumphant note.
Although Dark Waters primarily addresses corporate wrongdoing, it still manages to convey some sense of hope in its depiction of one man standing up to a colossal corporation. The brilliance of Dark Waters lies in its acknowledgment that while the substantial settlements secured against DuPont are commendable, they cannot truly compensate for the extensive harm inflicted by the company. Although it’s positive that victims received compensation, it does not absolve DuPont of its misdeeds or the many lives lost before they could receive any redress.
