Make way for new puzzle challenges: The New York Times introduces a new game.
The New York Times has launched a new title in its Games lineup following the success of Wordle – and it focuses on math. Digits invites players to engage in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. You can currently try its beta version for free online.
In Digits, players are tasked with reaching a target number using a selection of six numbers. They can add, subtract, multiply, or divide those numbers to approximate the target number. Not every number must be used, making this game a true test of your math skills as you work to create the right equations.
Gamers receive a five-star rating for matching the target number perfectly, three stars for being within 10 of it, and one star for being within 25. Currently, players can also tackle five different puzzles with progressively larger numbers. I completed today’s puzzle and found it to be an enjoyable number-based challenge that should attract curious minds who appreciate puzzles like Threes or other The New York Times games like Wordle and Spelling Bee.
In an article announcing Digits and explaining The New York Times Games team's development process, The Times shared that they will use this free beta to rectify bugs and determine if the game merits further development into "a phase where the coding and designs are finalized." Hence, enjoy Digits while available, as The New York Times may discontinue it if the feedback isn’t as favorable as expected.
Digits' beta is currently playable for free on The New York Times Games website.

Wordle’s exciting journey: New York Times reviews the phenomenon’s remarkable 2022.
If you logged on to Twitter exactly a year ago, you likely remember when your feed became flooded with gray, yellow, and green boxes. Although it launched in 2021 and gained traction in December of that year, Wordle unexpectedly transformed into a cultural sensation in early 2022, almost impossible to escape unless muted. Its success story is rare in gaming, appealing broadly due to its straightforward design.
Wordle's popularity skyrocketed just as rapidly as its user base. In late January 2022, the New York Times reported it had purchased the puzzle game from creator Josh Wardle for an undisclosed sum in the low seven figures – a surprising move that nearly overshadowed Sony’s concurrent announcement about acquiring Destiny 2 developer Bungie. This acquisition raised concern among fans who worried that corporate ownership might compromise the independence of the beloved game.
