We have our first glimpse of Ari Aster's Eddington.
Ari Aster is set to make an appearance at the Croisette as Eddington is scheduled to debut at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where it will vie for the prestigious Palme d’Or.
In conjunction with the Cannes announcement, A24 has unveiled the first image and poster for Eddington. The photo features Joaquin Phoenix as the sheriff and Pedro Pascal as the mayor, engaged in a standoff in their small town. Aster's Western black comedy portrays a confrontation between the sheriff and mayor that "ignites a powder keg," leading to a clash among neighbors in Eddington, New Mexico.
Eddington includes a cast of Phoenix, Pascal, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, Amélie Hoeferle, Clifton Collins Jr., William Belleau, Austin Butler, and Emma Stone.
This marks Aster's fourth feature film, following 2014's Hereditary, 2019's Midsommar, and 2023's Beau Is Afraid. A24 has been responsible for distributing all of Aster’s films, including the anticipated Eddington. Hereditary was previously A24’s highest-grossing horror film, earning $87.8 million globally until it was surpassed by 2023’s Talk to Me.
Eddington is not the only A24 project making its way to Cannes. Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest will screen out of competition while Harry Lighton’s Pillion has been selected for Un Certain Regard.
Eddington will face tough competition at Cannes, with prominent films vying for the Palme d’Or, including Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme, featuring Benicio del Toro, Mia Threapleton, and Michael Cera; Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague, a dramatization about the creation of Breathless with Guillaume Marbeck and Zoey Deutch; Kelly Reichardt’s The Mastermind, a crime drama starring John Magaro, Josh O’Connor, and Alana Haim; and Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value, a dramedy featuring Renate Reinsve.
The 2025 Cannes Festival is scheduled to take place from May 13 to 24.
