Google's Gboard may soon include a meme generator powered by AI.

Memes have surged in popularity, and Google is working on an AI-driven meme generator aimed at simplifying meme creation via Gboard. This forthcoming tool, internally dubbed “Meme Studio,” has been criticized by Android Authority, the outlet that first reported on it.
The report indicates that this new feature presents users with two methods for meme creation: “custom” and “generate.” The “custom” option allows users to select a base image from a selection of thousands and add their own captions. It seems that Google is automating the task of sourcing and labeling these base images.
The “generate” option is particularly significant, although it may face backlash once launched. When this option is chosen, the AI selects a base image and creates captions based on a designated topic. Users will receive multiple suggestions to choose from and can also craft their own captions from scratch. It's crucial to understand that this feature requires an internet connection to function properly since it operates server-side.
Currently, the “generate” feature has drawn criticism for producing “ironically bad memes” that do not align with the cultural references and humor of Gen Z, which is the author's generation. Some of this criticism may arise from the built-in filters that stop the creation of explicit or offensive content.
Android Authority states: “Due to its outdated format and other limitations, Google’s new meme generation tool isn’t very effective.”
The author suggests these restrictions exist because “Meme Studio” seems primarily targeted at older users or those who haven’t yet found another meme generator.
As a member of Generation X—one of those “older individuals”—I find this viewpoint reasonable. However, it's essential to remember that the feature is not yet available. It will likely be enhanced before its full rollout, and additional updates may come after Google receives user feedback.
In the end, let’s hope Google can create a meme generator that resonates with both younger and older audiences. Stay tuned.
