Three underrated shows on HBO Max that you should check out in April 2025.

      The third season of The White Lotus has concluded, and season two of The Last of Us will be premiering soon on HBO and Max. But what will you watch in the meantime?

      Fortunately, HBO and Max offer plenty of potential choices for your next binge-worthy series. If you need some suggestions, we’ve compiled a list of three underrated shows on HBO Max that you should check out this April. With a mix of a dark comedy, an action-filled anime, and an exciting detective series, you’ll have plenty to enjoy until May arrives.

      **Vice Principals (2016-2017)**

      Before his guest appearance in The White Lotus season three, Walton Goggins starred in Vice Principals, a dark comedy that aired for two seasons on HBO. Goggins and Danny McBride lead the show as Lee Russell and Neal Gamby, two competing vice principals at North Jackson High. Each believes they are the best candidate for the principal position, but they are passed over in favor of Dr. Belinda Brown (Kimberly Hébert Gregory).

      Despite their rivalry, Gamby and Russell decide to collaborate in an effort to undermine Brown, hoping one of them can take her place. Although they share a common aim, their personalities clash, and they could end up sabotaging each other long before they achieve their desired positions.

      **Lazarus (2025)**

      While Shinichirō Watanabe may not be widely recognized outside anime circles, he is the director of the iconic Cowboy Bebop and several other successful Japanese animated series. Lazarus is Watanabe's latest endeavor, presenting humanity with a distinctive challenge. In 2052, leading neuroscientist Dr. Skinner (David Matranga) develops a drug called Hapna, which can cure nearly any disease. However, by 2055, Skinner reveals that he deceived humanity into accepting a drug that will prove fatal to anyone three years post-consumption, with the first casualties expected in just 30 days.

      For Axel Gilberto (Jack Stansbury), this isn't his concern until he is forcibly enlisted into the Lazarus team, which has a mere month to locate Skinner and compel him to share his cure with the world. Time is of the essence, as failure could result in the deaths of billions.

      **C.B. Strike (2017-Present)**

      BBC/HBO

      Though Cormoran Blue Strike (Tom Burke) isn't as famous as Harry Potter, he is the second protagonist created by J.K. Rowling to feature in seven novels. Rowling writes the Cormoran Strike mystery series under the Robert Galbraith pseudonym, and the HBO/BBC adaptation is rapidly nearing the end of the available source material!

      Max has somewhat confusingly categorized the six seasons of C.B. Strike as four seasons, but all episodes are available. The series follows the titular private investigator and his complex relationship with partner Robin Venetia Ellacott (Holliday Grainger). The most recent season adapts The Ink Black Heart, the sixth novel of the seven published so far. It is expected that Rowling will eventually pen ten novels. However, unless a long hiatus is on the horizon, Game of Thrones isn't the only HBO show that is outpacing its source material.
