Switch 2 troubles extend to Canada as Nintendo postpones preorders.

      Nintendo

Nintendo Switch 2 issues have now affected our neighbors to the north. In Canada, pre-orders for the eagerly awaited hybrid console have been postponed just before their scheduled start date.

Jonathan Ore, a senior writer for CBC Radio Online, shared on Bluesky a statement from Nintendo of Canada on Tuesday, indicating that pre-orders for the Switch 2 have been delayed in the country to "align with the timing of pre-orders" in the United States. The statement reads:

"Pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 in Canada will not commence on April 9, 2025, in order to sync with the timing of U.S. pre-orders, which is yet to be determined. Nintendo will provide updated information at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025, remains unchanged."

Nintendo of Canada’s last-minute postponement of the Switch 2 pre-orders comes just days after Nintendo of America made a similar announcement following President Trump’s proposed global tariffs. This delay was implemented to "assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions."

Following the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct presentation, fans took to social media to express their shock at the $450 price displayed on the Switch 2 page of Nintendo’s website, as the company had not disclosed the price during the stream. The pre-order delays occurring in both the U.S. and Canada due to tariffs have led to concerns that the Switch 2 may end up costing even more than $450 (or $500 for the Mario Kart World bundle), despite Nintendo's attempts to maintain its gaming ecosystem as a respite from reality.

In an interview with The Verge, Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser stated that tariffs did not influence the $450 price tag for the Switch 2. He explained that the pricing is attributed to factors such as the larger LCD screen, the GameChat feature, expanded Joy-Con controllers, and enhanced internal hardware.

While the release of the Switch 2 is set for June 5 as scheduled, a new date for pre-orders has not yet been communicated. If you still intend to pre-order the console, we have created a guide to assist you.

Will the Switch 2 work with my Switch Dock?

Instead of completely reinventing the wheel with the Switch 2, Nintendo has opted to stick with the successful formula of the original Switch and essentially create a more powerful iteration of its hybrid console. Although there are numerous differences between the original Switch and the Switch 2, the new device is still designed to function as both a handheld and home console when docked. A new Switch 2 will include a dock as expected, but current Switch owners may already possess one or more docks they wish to use with their Switch 2. We've previously discussed the backward compatibility of the Switch 2 with the best Switch games, but how does it fare with hardware like the dock or controllers? Let’s find out if your old docks can accommodate the power of the Switch 2.

Can you use a Switch dock with the Switch 2?

Unfortunately, your previous Switch dock will not be compatible with the Switch 2. This is due to several reasons, the primary one being the size of the Switch 2. While the new console isn’t dramatically larger than the original, it is sufficiently bigger that it won't fit within the old dock.

Inside the smile factory: Nintendo’s quest to save the Switch 2 from reality

“Our number one value is putting smiles on people’s faces.” That’s what Bill Trinen tells me just hours after the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct concludes. True to the company’s ethos, Nintendo of America’s Vice President of Player and Product Experience is upbeat as we discuss the Nintendo Switch 2. He has good cause for his optimism. He is currently in New York City for the first hands-on event of a console that has been in development since 2019, overcoming the challenges of a pandemic and multiple waves of political unrest.

Switch 2 vs Xbox Series X: which system is right for you?

Gamers often compare consoles to determine which offers the best experience. The latest addition to the console market is the Nintendo Switch 2, which outperforms its predecessor when directly comparing the Switch 2 to the original Switch, as would be expected with any generational upgrade. However, the more intriguing comparisons arise when considering the Switch 2 against the PS5, Steam Deck, and Xbox Series X. While technical specifications are one aspect, a console encompasses much more than just raw power. We have compared all the factors gamers should consider when deciding whether to purchase a new console, including the best games, controllers, and pricing, to help you determine which system is right for you.
