      Wordle has competition: The New York Times unveils a new puzzle game.

      The New York Times has launched the next addition to its Games catalog following Wordle's success—this time with a focus on math. Digits invites players to engage in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of numbers. You can currently play its beta version for free online.

      In Digits, players are given a target number to match using six provided numbers, allowing them to add, subtract, multiply, or divide to get as close to the target as possible. Not every number needs to be utilized, making this game a true test of your mathematical skills as you figure out the right equations.

      Players will receive a five-star rating for hitting the target number exactly, a three-star rating for coming within 10, and a one-star rating for being within 25 of the target number. At present, players can also access five different puzzles with progressively larger numbers. I tried today’s puzzle and found it to be an enjoyable math-based challenge that should attract puzzle enthusiasts who enjoy games like Threes or other New York Times titles such as Wordle and Spelling Bee.

      In an article that introduced Digits and explained The New York Times Games team's approach to game development, The Times indicates that the team will utilize this free beta to troubleshoot bugs and determine if it's worth advancing into a more active development stage “where the game is coded and the designs are finalized.” So play Digits while it’s still available, as The New York Times may discontinue the project if the response is not as expected.
