The director of District 9 is set to revive Starship Troopers for a theatrical release.

The 30th anniversary of Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers will be in 2027, and there is now a possibility of a new interpretation of the franchise being released either that year or shortly after. Neill Blomkamp, the Oscar-nominated co-writer and director of District 9, is set to helm a reboot of Starship Troopers.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Blomkamp will write and direct the new Starship Troopers for Sony's Columbia Pictures. His wife, Terri Tatchell, who co-wrote District 9 and Chappie, will also produce the film alongside him. However, this reboot will not mimic Verhoeven's satirical approach to the story. Instead, Blomkamp plans to align the film more closely with Robert A. Heinlein's original 1959 Hugo Award-winning novel.
The Starship Troopers novel significantly impacted the sci-fi genre by portraying an intergalactic conflict between humans and enormous alien bugs. Some elements of Heinlein's narrative have been interpreted as fascist due to its militaristic viewpoint and the premise that individuals must serve the government or join the military to gain full citizenship rights.
If Blomkamp intends to move away from the distinctive satire present in Verhoeven's film, it may come as a surprise considering that his acclaimed film, District 9, also contained satirical themes. To date, Blomkamp has directed three sci-fi films, including Chappie and Elysium, though several of his proposed projects have not materialized. He worked on sequels for both Alien and RoboCop, neither of which proceeded. His latest film, Gran Turismo, is loosely based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough, who trained to become a professional racer after honing his skills through the Gran Turismo game.
Despite grossing only $121 million globally against an estimated budget of $101-110 million, Starship Troopers developed a cult following after its 1997 release. Multiple direct-to-video sequels have been produced, and the franchise has even expanded into video games with Starship Troopers: Extermination. Casper Van Dien returned to his role as Johnny Rico in two of the sequels and in Extermination.
As of now, Sony has not announced a release date for the new Starship Troopers film.

Mike Flanagan, known for his work in horror, both writes and directs The Life of Chuck, with Flanagan also producing alongside his regular collaborator Trevor Macy from Intrepid Pictures.
