Move over, Wordle: The New York Times has launched a new puzzle game
The New York Times has unveiled its next game following the success of Wordle—this one focusing on math. Digits requires players to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers. You can play its beta version online for free right now.
In Digits, players are given a target number to match. They receive six numbers to work with and can use addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division to approach the target. Not all numbers need to be utilized, so this game will challenge your math skills as you combine numbers and form the right equations to reach the target number as closely as possible.
Players will earn a five-star rating for matching the target exactly, three stars if they are within 10 of the target, and one star if they come within 25 of the target number. Currently, players can also access five different puzzles with progressively larger numbers. I completed today’s puzzle and found it to be an enjoyable math-based game that should attract curious minds who enjoy puzzle games like Threes or other New York Times games such as Wordle and Spelling Bee.
In an article announcing Digits and discussing The New York Times Games team's development process, The Times mentions that the team will use this free beta phase to address bugs and determine whether it warrants moving into a more active development phase “where the game is coded and the designs are finalized.” So, take advantage of Digits while it’s available, as The New York Times may decide to discontinue the project if the response isn't as anticipated.
Digits' beta can be played for free now on The New York Times Games' website.
