Recently, there hasn't been much news regarding the Vision Pro or its future versions, but Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that Apple is gearing up for a significant launch with visionOS 3. While details are scarce, Gurman notes that Apple "cannot allow the Vision Pro to fade away" due to its significant investment in the technology, which necessitates ongoing updates for its purchasers. He mentions that visionOS 3 will be "a feature-rich release," with more information expected at this year's WWDC. However, it’s important to note that the features won't include Apple Intelligence, as that was addressed in the visionOS 2.4 beta, set to be released to the public in April. Additionally, the Vision Pro app for iPhone and Spatial Gallery will debut prior to the June WWDC, so visionOS 3 is anticipated to be a fresh and exciting update.

It is widely recognized that the Vision Pro is perceived as somewhat of a failed product, and reports indicate that the development of a new model has encountered delays and pauses. Nevertheless, Gurman still maintains that both a new Vision Pro model and a more affordable option are in progress. If Apple intends to pursue this technology long-term, it makes sense for them to continue working on visionOS, as they can test new features with the current Vision Pro audience and gradually build a solid operating system to support future spatial computing products.

Apple's Vision Pro is set to feature the M5 chip, although that may not be its most pressing need. Although the full rollout of Apple’s M4 chip family is still pending—with the M4 Ultra yet to debut—news has emerged that the M5 chip is now in production. This suggests that it may make its way into Macs by late this year or early next year. If you’re considering buying a new MacBook Pro, 2026 may be the year to finally make your purchase, as Apple is anticipated to fully redesign its flagship laptop for next year's release, which would be timely if it coincides with the introduction of a powerful new M5 chip.

As the Vision Pro marks its first anniversary, there’s one decisive action Apple must take to set it back on course: launch a more affordable model. This strategy counters Apple’s typical approach—focused on creating premium devices at corresponding prices—but is crucial for making the headset truly mainstream.

On another note, Apple has reportedly ceased work on smart glasses to compete with Meta. Rumors had suggested Apple was developing a pair of AR glasses, but a recent report from Mark Gurman indicates the project has been scrapped. While Apple has shown considerable interest in the AR/VR sector, the Vision Pro did not achieve the impact the company anticipated, due to its exorbitant price and its focus on professional applications, resulting in lower sales and excess inventory. The aim was to create a rival to Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses, but Gurman explains that the cancellation followed attempts to modify and enhance the glasses' design. The initial version was meant to connect to an iPhone, but its limited power restricted applications, and the demands of the device negatively affected phone battery life. Apple then shifted to connecting the glasses with a Mac, but that faced unfavorable reviews. The development team experienced shifting objectives, which compounded the challenges, ultimately leading to the project's cancellation.
