For his upcoming project, Zach Cregger, known for Barbarian, will direct a reboot of Resident Evil. According to Deadline, Cregger is set to lead the Resident Evil film, having co-written the screenplay with Shay Hatten (From the World of John Wick: Ballerina). Sony is scheduled to release this reboot in theaters on September 18, 2026.
“I’ve been a passionate fan of these games for many years, and it’s a genuine privilege to bring this incredible title to life,” Cregger shared with Deadline.
Resident Evil’s rights became available earlier this year. While Warner Bros. considered acquiring the property, it was Sony that ultimately secured the rights and will produce the film under its Columbia Pictures label. Constantin Film will also be involved in production alongside PlayStation Productions and Vertigo Entertainment.
Originally a Japanese horror video game by Capcom, Resident Evil debuted in 1996, blending survival horror with first- and third-person shooter gameplay as players face zombies and other mutated beings. With nearly 30 games produced, Resident Evil has established itself as one of the most successful video game franchises in history.
The game's popularity led to a live-action film adaptation. Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, the 2002 film Resident Evil features Milla Jovovich as the lead character Alice. The franchise has since grown to include five sequels, a spinoff film (2021's Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City), and a spinoff television series (Netflix’s Resident Evil).
Following his success with Barbarian, Cregger has emerged as a sought-after director in Hollywood. The 2022 horror film was a surprising success for 20th Century Studios, earning $45 million from a budget of $4.5 million.
Cregger’s next horror project, Weapons, is set to release on January 16, 2026. He is both the writer and director, with the film starring Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, Amy Madigan, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, and June Diane Raphael. New Line Cinema competed fiercely to acquire Weapons and offered approximately $38 million for the project, which included $10 million for Cregger.
With a 2026 release on the horizon, filming for Resident Evil is expected to start sometime this summer.
