Move over, Wordle: The New York Times has a new puzzle game

The New York Times has unveiled another title for its Games catalog following the ongoing success of Wordle, and this one focuses on math. Digits challenges players to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers. You can currently play its beta version for free online.

In Digits, players are given a target number to match. Using six numbers, they must add, subtract, multiply, or divide to get as close to the target as possible. Not all numbers need to be utilized, making this game a test of your math skills as you combine numbers and attempt to formulate the right equations to reach the target number.

Players earn a five-star rating for an exact match with the target number, a three-star rating for being within 10 of it, and a one-star rating for being within 25 of the target number. Currently, players can also access five different puzzles with progressively larger numbers. I tried today's puzzle and found it to be an enjoyable number-based game that should attract those who enjoy puzzle games like Threes or other New York Times titles such as Wordle and Spelling Bee.

In an article introducing Digits and explaining The New York Times Games team's development process, The Times states that the team will use this free beta to address bugs and determine if it should proceed to a more active development phase where the game will be fully coded and designed. Therefore, play Digits while you have the chance, as The New York Times may discontinue the project if it does not elicit the desired response.

Digits' beta is currently available for free on The New York Times Games website.

If you logged onto Twitter exactly one year ago, you likely remember the moment your feed became filled with gray, yellow, and green boxes. Although it launched in 2021 and achieved mainstream popularity in December that year, Wordle turned into a sudden cultural sensation in early 2022 that was hard to escape unless muted. It was an exceptional gaming success story that could reach a wide audience due to its simple elegance.

Wordle’s popularity grew just as rapidly as its user base. In late January 2022, The New York Times announced it had purchased the puzzle game from its creator Josh Wardle in a deal worth a low seven figures—an unexpected move that nearly overshadowed Sony’s announcement of acquiring Destiny 2 developer Bung
