The Opera web browser is entering a new era of AI tools. At MWC 2025, the company showcased a feature called Browser Operator that translates sentences into actionable commands for web browsing, eliminating the need for users to navigate through various pages and buttons.
Users simply need to enter a query in natural language, and the AI tool will take care of everything. For instance, you can instruct the Operator to book three concert tickets on a ticketing website. The AI browsing agent will check the appropriate boxes, complete the ticket booking, and bring you to the final payment step.
As the browsing agent operates, users can view a detailed step-by-step breakdown of clicks and searches it carries out, resembling an AI reasoning model. It can also manage multi-step queries and retain context from prior conversations.
How does Operator function?

This isn’t a completely independent browsing experience. Opera mentions that it will pause at steps where user intervention may be needed, such as entering sensitive data like phone numbers or vehicle information. Central to this process is the AI Composer Engine, which translates user queries into browsing commands.
A notable feature of the Browser Operator is that it operates privately on your device rather than relying on a cloud system, ensuring your data is secure. "Opera’s Browser Operator runs natively inside your browser, on your device," the company states. This means that information like cookies or browsing history does not leave your device.

Additionally, the AI doesn’t view a web page as an image or a screenshot; instead, it emphasizes the textual components. This allows the AI engine to skip scrolling through entire webpages, thus accelerating the overall browsing process.
Since the Operator can interact with UI elements that are typically hidden from users, it can easily handle pop-up boxes and verification prompts. If any intermediate steps require user action, the Operator will prompt users to briefly take control.

Opera describes this as a “human-in-the-loop” approach. For those scenarios, users can either complete the necessary actions on the webpage or simply type the required information into the Operator chatbox. At no point does the Operator retain any information, as that data is strictly for the webpage to manage.
Opera’s Browser Operator is currently in the preview stage and will be rolled out as part of a feature update in the “near future.” However, this will not be the first agentic AI product of its type; OpenAI has also created its own version called Operator, and Gemini Deep Research represents another example of web-based agentic AI.
