For the first time in the history of Monster Hunter, you can carry two weapons during a hunt. This feature allows you to not only explore options with your primary weapon but also to try out a secondary weapon in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Choosing the right weapon can be challenging enough, especially since you can also hold a second weapon of your choice. However, you won't start with access to two weapons, and switching between them can be a bit tricky. We will explain how to use your secondary weapon in Monster Hunter Wilds and suggest some good backup weapon choices.

How to switch to your secondary weapon in Monster Hunter Wilds

To use a secondary weapon, you must first unlock this capability by completing the campaign quest titled Village of the Whispering Winds. This mission is the second in the main storyline, and when you finish it, you will gain access to a Seikret mount and a secondary weapon slot. After this, you can learn how to switch between your two weapons.

Step 1: To mount your Seikret, press up on your d-pad if you're using a controller or Tab if you're on PC. If your Seikret is not close by, you can call it, and it will come to you.

Step 2: You can only swap weapons while mounted on your Seikret. Press the right d-pad button or the X key on PC to switch to your secondary weapon. If you attempt to swap weapons while not mounted, it will automatically call your Seikret and swap weapons at the same time.

Step 3: You can now dismount from your Seikret to use your secondary weapon. It’s a common misconception that the secondary weapon is only usable while riding your Seikret, but you can use it while not mounted. If you want to return to your primary weapon, simply repeat step two.

How to change your secondary weapon

If you want to customize the weapons you use in your primary and secondary slots, you can do so easily.

Step 1: Go to your tent at the base camp or any pop-up camps in the world. You should see a screen with you and your Palico seated, along with several menu options.

Step 2: Navigate to the second tab and select the Change Equipment option.

Step 3: You can now choose the secondary weapon slot and select the weapon you'd like to equip.

Best primary and secondary weapon combinations

Although you don’t have to utilize a secondary weapon, it can enhance your character build and pair nicely with your main weapon. Here are some recommended primary and secondary weapon combinations to consider during a hunt.

Any weapons + Light/Heavy Bowgun: Using a melee primary weapon alongside the Light or Heavy Bowgun provides a good balance between close-range and long-range combat. The Light Bowgun offers a faster firing rate, while the Heavy Bowgun delivers more damage but is slower.

Dual Blades + Bow: This combination offers a coordinated playstyle for fast melee combat paired with ranged attacks. It's quite enjoyable to use the Bow while riding your Seikret to maximize your mobility.

Hunting Horn + Great Sword: This sturdier combination can inflict significant damage despite being slower. The Hunting Horn provides valuable buffs that can assist you while using your Great Sword, such as increased damage.

Insect Glaive + Dual Blades: If you prefer quick movements and fast strikes, this combo is perfect. The Dual Blades grant buffs for perfect dodges, while the Insect Glaive equips you with vertical mobility to evade danger.
