      High School (2022)

High School | Season 1 Trailer | Coming October 14

High School isn’t overlooked due to a lack of appreciation. In reality, the single-season comedy boasts a flawless 100% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and an impressive 94% audience score. Nevertheless, it’s one of those series you may have never heard of. Based on the memoir by Clea DuVall and Tegan and Sara Quin (yes, from the pop duo Tegan and Sara), it offers a delightful throwback to the music and style culture of the ‘90s, which embraced grunge and rave.

As the characters (Railey and Seazynn Gilliland) face common teenage struggles relating to identity and first loves, they also delve into their profound love for music. Rolling Stone and The New York Times named High School one of the best shows of 2022, making its lack of widespread recognition quite puzzling. This series is likely to resonate with anyone who grew up during that time, regardless of their familiarity with Tegan and Sara.

A League of Their Own (2022)

Due to the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike, A League of Their Own faced challenges despite receiving positive reviews and being renewed for a four-episode second and final season, which ultimately got canceled, disappointing fans. Still, the first season of this comedy-drama, inspired by the 1992 film of the same name, is worth a watch.

Set in 1943, the series explores a women's professional baseball league and the women who aspire to play this typically male-dominated sport. Central to the story are two women: Carson Shaw (Abbi Jacobson), who pursues her dream of professional baseball while her husband serves in the war, and Maxine (Chanté Adams), a Black woman passionate about the sport who struggles to find a team willing to let her try out. With a blend of heart and humor, it’s unfortunate that A League of Their Own didn’t receive the recognition it warranted given the overwhelmingly positive feedback from critics and viewers alike.

The Summer I Turned Pretty (2022-)

The Summer I Turned Pretty - Official Trailer | Prime Video

A heartfelt, typical coming-of-age romantic drama, The Summer I Turned Pretty centers around Isabel “Belly” Conkin (Lola Tung), a young woman on the verge of her 16th birthday. Belly reconnects with old family friends, including a boy named Conrad (Christopher Briney), who was her childhood crush. However, Belly becomes entangled in a love triangle involving Conrad and his brother Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno).

Focusing on first loves, taking risks, and the journey of growing up, The Summer I Turned Pretty is adapted from the novel trilogy of the same name. The charming series has garnered decent reviews and presents a heartwarming story to enjoy with your own kids, who may be experiencing similar situations as Belly.
