Conan O’Brien will be hosting the Oscars: here's what to anticipate and our thoughts on his performance.

This year’s Academy Awards will be a bit different. For starters, there won’t be any musical performances at the Oscars for the songs nominated for Best Song, which we consider a mistake. Additionally, four-time host Jimmy Kimmel won’t be overseeing the ceremony as he did for the past two years. Instead, Conan O’Brien, another late-night TV personality, will host the Oscars for the first time on Sunday, March 2.

O’Brien previously worked as a writer for The Simpsons and became well-known in the ’90s as the host of Late Night with Conan O’Brien before he briefly transitioned to The Tonight Show on NBC. After a falling out with NBC in 2010, he moved to TBS to host the late-night show Conan for 11 years before stepping back from weekly hosting. Since 2021, O’Brien has concentrated on podcasting and other comedic projects. He has also hosted the Emmy Awards and the White House Correspondents’ dinner twice.

What to expect from Conan O’Brien at the Oscars

In the video above, O’Brien humorously claims that the nine-hour telecast will feature "several moments where I’ll be shirtless and oiled," adding, "I think that’s going to hurt the program incredibly." Although he often makes himself the target of his jokes, he’s likely joking about being shirtless.

O’Brien's comedy tends to be less political than Kimmel’s, though there could still be some light political humor. We wouldn't be shocked if O’Brien’s frequent collaborator, Robert Smigel, brings his famous puppet Triumph the Insult Comic Dog to the Oscars. If political jokes are made this year, they will almost certainly come from Triumph, assuming he makes an appearance.

How we think Conan O’Brien will do at the Oscars

The short answer is that he’ll do well. Even without decades of experience in late-night comedy, hosting the Emmys is quite similar to hosting the Oscars. There shouldn't be any issues with O’Brien's performance, and if there are any awkward moments during the show, he usually knows how to make the best of those situations.

We would love to see O’Brien pay tribute to the legacy of nine-time Academy Awards host Billy Crystal by opening the show with a song that includes references to all 10 of this year’s Best Picture nominees. However, that might be too much to ask.
