Move over, Wordle: The New York Times has launched a new puzzle game
The New York Times has revealed its next addition to the Games catalog following Wordle's ongoing success -- and this one focuses on math. Digits involves players adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing numbers. You can currently play its beta version for free online.
In Digits, players get a target number to match, along with six numbers they can use to perform calculations to get as close to that target as possible. Not all numbers have to be used, making this game a true test of your math skills as you combine numbers to craft the correct equations needed to reach the target.
A perfect match of the target number earns players a five-star rating, while getting within 10 grants a three-star rating, and being within 25 earns a one-star rating. At present, players can also try out five different puzzles that feature progressively larger numbers. I tried out today’s puzzle and found it to be an entertaining number-based game that should appeal to curious minds who enjoy puzzle games like Threes or other New York Times titles such as Wordle and Spelling Bee.
In an article discussing the launch of Digits and the game development process of The New York Times Games team, it stated that the team will use this free beta to address bugs and evaluate whether it should proceed to a more active development stage "where the game is coded and the designs are finalized." So take the chance to play Digits while you can, as The New York Times may discontinue it if the response isn’t as favorable as they anticipate.
Digits' beta is currently available to play for free on The New York Times Games' website.

Wordle’s wild year: New York Times reviews the phenomenon’s significant 2022
If you logged onto Twitter exactly one year ago, you likely remember the moment your feed started filling with gray, yellow, and green boxes. Although it was launched in 2021 and gained popularity in December of that year, Wordle rapidly turned into a cultural phenomenon in early 2022 that was nearly impossible to escape, unless you muted certain words. It was a rare success story in gaming, reaching a wide audience due to its elegant simplicity.
Wordle’s popularity surged just as quickly as its player base. In late January 2022, the New York Times announced its acquisition of the puzzle game from creator Josh Wardle for an undisclosed, low seven-figure sum -- a surprise move that nearly overshadowed Sony’s announcement that it was purchasing Destiny 2 developer Bungie just hours prior. This acquisition raised concerns among fans who worried that a corporate takeover of such an independent game could compromise its essence.
