*Oppenheimer* (2023)
Melinda Sue Gordon / Universal Pictures
After more than twenty years in filmmaking, Nolan finally received his much-desired Oscar for *Oppenheimer*. Regarded by many, including our site, as the standout film of 2023, *Oppenheimer* is a three-hour historical drama that follows J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), the nuclear physicist involved in developing the atomic bomb during World War II. Nolan portrays Oppenheimer as a troubled hero grappling with the ethical implications of initiating nuclear warfare.
Like many of Nolan’s other works, *Oppenheimer* unfolds in a nonlinear format, concentrating on Oppenheimer’s experiences in Los Alamos and the years following WWII, including the Senate confirmation hearing for Lewis Strauss (Robert Downey Jr.). The film received 13 Oscar nominations and won seven: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Murphy), Best Supporting Actor (Downey Jr.), Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, and Best Original Score.

*Platoon* (1986)
Orion Pictures
Oliver Stone took the saying “war is hell” quite seriously in *Platoon*, an anti-war film set in the late 1960s. After joining the U.S. Army, Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen) is placed in an infantry platoon in South Vietnam. The young soldiers are influenced by the fierce Staff Sergeant Barnes (Tom Berenger) and the easygoing Sergeant Elias (Willem Dafoe).
As the conflict intensifies, Chris’s hopeful perspective on the war rapidly shifts to despair as he witnesses brutal acts of violence, including some perpetrated by his own comrades. Ultimately, Chris must decide whom to follow, learning that in war there are no true victors—only survivors and the deceased. Nominated for eight Oscars, *Platoon* clinched four: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Sound, and Best Film Editing.

*Dances with Wolves* (1990)
Orion Pictures
*Dances with Wolves* is not an overrated Best Picture winner. Should it have triumphed over *Goodfellas*? Certainly not. When *Goodfellas* is taken out of the equation, *Dances With Wolves* stands as a grand epic from the driven star-turned-director Kevin Costner. Serving in the Union Army during the Civil War, John J. Dunbar transfers to a remote outpost in present-day Colorado.
Though isolated, Dunbar forges a connection with the Lakota Indians, sharing customs with them and learning their language. He grows to admire the Lakota culture as they welcome him into their community. This peace is disrupted when the Union Army advances West, complicating Dunbar's obligation to serve his country with his desire to respect the Lakota people. Nominated for 12 Oscars, *Dances with Wolves* won seven: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay,
