Take a look at Meta's not-so-deceptive strategy to compete with ChatGPT.
Meta aims to secure a significant share of the generative AI market. In line with its long-term vision to become integral to our daily lives, the company under Mark Zuckerberg is preparing to launch its Meta AI chatbot as a standalone application, according to a CNBC report citing unnamed sources familiar with the situation.
The company intends to release the AI chatbot app between April and June this year, as per the sources. Additionally, Meta may introduce a subscription option that offers more advanced functionalities.
A standalone Meta AI app would compete with various existing AI chatbots, including popular options like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, X’s Grok, Perplexity, and DeepSeek, which debuted in China just last month.
Meta first revealed Meta AI in September 2023 and integrated it into its suite of applications—including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp—beginning last April. Like other generative AI applications, Meta AI engages in natural, human-like conversations and can produce images based on user prompts.
In January, Zuckerberg mentioned that he anticipates 2025 to be the year when a highly intelligent and personalized AI assistant reaches over one billion people, expecting Meta AI to lead in this space.
By offering Meta AI as a standalone application instead of solely through its social media platforms, Meta believes it will facilitate more meaningful interactions with the AI, according to their sources.
If a major player like Meta does launch its AI as a standalone app, it would intensify competition and potentially fragment the AI chatbot market further. Moreover, Meta's extensive data resources might enhance its AI’s personalization capabilities, although this could also heighten privacy concerns compared to other AI chatbots.
In response to rumors of Meta launching a standalone AI chatbot app, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman humorously remarked on X, “OK, fine, maybe we’ll do a social app,” adding, “lol if Facebook tries to come at us and we just uno reverse them it would be so funny.”

OpenAI has recently entered the realm of AI agents with its introduction of a new feature called ChatGPT Tasks. Announced on Tuesday, this feature will be available to subscribers of its paid tier, allowing users to set individual and recurring reminders using the ChatGPT interface.
Tasks perform precisely as the name suggests: Users can instruct ChatGPT to execute a specific action at a future time. This could include compiling a weekly news brief each Friday afternoon, providing a weather update for New York City tomorrow at 9 a.m., or reminding users to renew their passports before January 20. ChatGPT will also send push notifications with relevant information. To utilize this feature, users must select "4o with scheduled tasks" from the model picker menu and specify what they want the AI to do and when.
Google is gearing up to introduce a new “AI Mode” for its search engine, designed to facilitate users' transition into an interface similar to the Gemini AI chatbot. According to a report from The Information, an AI Mode tab will be added to the options in Google’s search results, where options like “All,” “Images,” “Videos,” and “Shopping” are found. The AI Mode aims to make Google search more user-friendly and intuitive, allowing users to ask follow-up questions related to the links in their results through a chatbot text interface.
OpenAI recently launched its "12 Days of OpenAI" media campaign on December 5, presenting new features, models, subscription options, and capabilities within its expanding ChatGPT product ecosystem during a series of live-stream events. Here’s a summary of the announcements made. On Day 1, OpenAI unveiled its o1 reasoning model and launched ChatGPT Pro.
