Apple has fallen behind in the Siri revolution, prompting Microsoft to introduce Copilot for Mac.

Microsoft has introduced a dedicated Copilot app for Mac today. Currently, the app is only accessible to users in the US and UK, but it comes packed with the latest features from Microsoft, including the new Think Deeper mode.

The sole system requirement is that your machine must be operating on macOS 14 or a later version. On the hardware front, any Mac equipped with M1 silicon or a newer Apple processor is compatible with the app. And yes, it does include a native dark mode.

The Copilot app features a quick launch keyboard shortcut — option + space — to activate the AI assistant. The version available for macOS supports multi-modal input, meaning it can handle text-based queries as well as voice and photo content.

Additionally, the app provides the Copilot Daily feature, offering a summarized overview of daily news from credible sources, weather updates, and more. This personalized audio briefing is somewhat akin to the Now Brief system used by Samsung on its Galaxy S25 series devices.

Copilot for macOS also includes support for functionalities like text-to-image generation, writing assistance, language translation, and image editing, among others. "Copilot combines the strength of AI with the creative potential of the latest OpenAI models all in one location," states the App Store listing.

It’s somewhat ironic that Copilot showcases OpenAI’s technology on an Apple platform, especially considering the rivalry between Microsoft and Apple. Notably, OpenAI’s GPT technologies serve as a connection between the two tech giants.

Microsoft is a key investor in OpenAI and a close business ally, with Copilot being one of the products that leverage OpenAI’s innovations. Earlier today, Microsoft implemented OpenAI’s latest AI model, GPT-4.5, within its Azure AI Foundry.

Now available in the App Store (and on my dock): Copilot for macOS 🍎 I can’t believe I lived without option+space for the countless tasks I ask Copilot daily. Apple enthusiasts can now join the party with their Mac alongside iPhone and iPad. Give it a try and share your thoughts! pic.twitter.com/Di4GE6IoyR

On Apple’s side, the company has signed a deal to closely integrate ChatGPT’s functionalities with Siri and its Apple Intelligence platforms across mobile and computing devices. For tasks that Siri cannot handle, ChatGPT steps in.

Reports indicate that Apple is experiencing delays in revamping Siri with generative AI, though progress is being made. The company recently finalized partnerships with Alibaba and Baidu to collaborate on AI initiatives in China.

In contrast, Google has replaced Google Assistant with the more advanced Gemini assistant on Android and other supported platforms, utilizing either native OS-level integration or the standalone Gemini app.

Will this just act as a temporary AI solution for Mac users? Time will tell. For the moment, Copilot for macOS hasn't been released across all markets. Nonetheless, Microsoft executive Yusuf Mehdi has confirmed that the team is working on broadening the app's availability.
