The Russo Brothers are returning. Joe and Anthony Russo are set to direct two more Avengers films: Doomsday and Secret Wars. Following Avengers: Endgame, the Russo Brothers departed Marvel to explore other ventures, including the upcoming Netflix sci-fi adventure, The Electric State. As their promotional tour nears completion, they will commence production on Doomsday in the coming months. During a conversation with Deadline, they shared their filming plans, ending with a lighthearted remark about potentially not surviving the demanding process.
“It’s all in London. We’re shooting them relatively back-to-back,” Joe mentioned on the red carpet at The Electric State premiere. “It’s a substantial amount of work again. We might or might not survive. We’ll see.”
Setting jokes aside, the Russos expressed their enthusiasm for creating a new narrative in the MCU that will “challenge” audiences.
“We’re very excited about it,” Joe added. “We have found a way into the story that we believe will challenge viewers. It’s a challenge for us to execute. And it’s genuinely thrilling for us; it inspires us to get up and do it.”
Anthony and Joe Russo hinted at the forthcoming Avengers films, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ and speculated about the potential appearances of X-Men characters as well as Deadpool and Wolverine.
At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, the Russo Brothers were officially announced as the directors for the next Avengers movies. Robert Downey Jr. is making a surprising comeback to Marvel as the new antagonist, Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom. Downey is well-known for portraying Tony Stark/Iron Man for over a decade in the MCU.
Much of the information regarding Doomsday and Secret Wars remains under wraps, a hallmark of the Marvel filmmaking strategy. When asked about the heroes that will feature in the Avengers films, Joe responded, “Who knows? I don’t know. I don’t know who we’re going to see. I still don’t know.” He later clarified that “anyone in the Marvel bag” could make an appearance in the Avengers movies.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to debut on May 1, 2026, while Avengers: Secret Wars is scheduled to arrive one year later on May 7, 2027.
