I'm concerned about a significant issue related to Apple's foldable device.

As a fan of mechanical keyboards, I've been particularly curious about one aspect since learning that Apple is reportedly developing a foldable tablet-laptop hybrid: what will typing on it be like?

We’re aware that Apple is at least exploring this type of device. A new patent concerning this product was recently awarded to the company, and several credible leakers and supply chain experts have provided extensive insights into Apple’s plans.

While it's unclear if Apple intends to market this device primarily as an iPad or a MacBook, that distinction may become irrelevant. Ultimately, it seems highly likely that it will offer a laptop mode.

To minimize size and weight, this probably indicates the inclusion of a virtual keyboard, eliminating the necessity for a separate iPad keyboard. If rumors and patents suggest that this device can unfold into a large 20-inch tablet, it will likely feature an all-screen design.

This raises some concerns for me: a built-in keyboard on a foldable device likely means typing on a flat glass surface. As someone who appreciates thick, responsive, high-travel keyboards, that is not ideal.

      Not suitable for extensive typing

While virtual keyboards work for quick typing sessions, they can be uncomfortable for prolonged use. Striking a rigid glass surface without any give can certainly lead to finger fatigue.

Another drawback is the lack of tactile feedback, resulting in a dull typing experience. Apple has attempted to address this with haptic feedback, a feature already available in iOS and iPadOS, but will it be adequate for serious typists? I’m skeptical, especially when considering the butterfly keyboard, which provided minimal feedback and was an overall poor typing experience.

There’s also the issue that flat glass keyboards make typing errors more likely. Without distinct keys with defined edges, it can be challenging to locate the right keys by touch alone. If you find yourself frequently looking down to ensure accuracy, your typing speed will inevitably decrease.

Beyond haptic feedback, there are indications that Apple is exploring additional methods to enhance flat keyboards. One patent describes a deformable glass structure that could adjust as you type. While this might be an improvement over a completely smooth surface, I doubt it will rival the effectiveness of a conventional keyboard.

      An innovative solution is required

I appreciate the potential of a large, foldable device like this iPad-MacBook hybrid. It has the potential to boost productivity by effortlessly switching between tablet and laptop modes based on user needs.

However, the keyboard remains a major concern for me. If Apple cannot perfect it, a crucial element of the device might be flawed, which could lead users to either purchase an external keyboard or steer clear of the device altogether.

Apple’s approach typically involves perfecting a product before its release, and they seldom rush to launch to keep up with competitors (with the exception of Apple Intelligence). This gives me some hope that Apple’s foldable will include a creative solution to the typing issue—after all, innovation is one of Apple’s strong suits.

That said, there's no certainty that Apple will address the challenges posed by a flat glass keyboard. Just look at the butterfly keyboard—Apple’s typing decisions aren’t always successful.

For me, the keyboard will be the true test of this foldable device. It must be pleasant to use, particularly if one of its key functions is as a laptop. With the foldable anticipated to debut around 2028, I’ll be eagerly waiting.
