Sarah Michelle Gellar discusses the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot: ‘We’re moving in that direction’

Sarah Michelle Gellar is now prepared for a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot.
Recently, news emerged that a revival of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is in the works at Hulu and is close to receiving a pilot order. Gellar is expected to reprise her role as Buffy Summers, the lead vampire slayer. Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao is on board to direct and executive produce.
Shortly after the announcement, Gellar shared insights on Instagram about how the reboot was conceived.
“Three years ago, I received a call from my close friend and mentor, Gail Berman. She mentioned wanting me to meet with Chloé Zhao to discuss her vision for a potential Buffy revival,” Gellar recounted. “I was astonished that Chloé even recognized me, but as I have done in the past, I told Gail that I couldn’t envision a way for the show to make a comeback. We’ve always shared that stance, but this time, there was something different in her tone. Eventually, I agreed to meet (mainly to meet Chloé), and what started as a twenty-minute coffee turned into a four-hour journey. We laughed, we cried, but primarily, we discussed how significant this show is to both of us.”
Though Gellar didn’t sign any formal agreement, she did consent to keep discussing with Chloé. Over the following years, they welcomed Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman to the creative team. The Zuckermans will write, showrun, and executive produce the Buffy reboot.
“I have consistently listened to the fans and recognized your wish to revisit Buffy and her universe, but I didn’t want to move forward unless I was confident we would do it justice,” Gellar stated. “This has been a lengthy journey, and it’s still ongoing. I assure you, we will only proceed with this show if we believe we can do it right. I can tell you that we are making progress toward that goal.”
Buffy the Vampire Slayer debuted as a film in 1992 with Kristy Swanson in the lead role. Five years later, Gellar took on the role of Buffy in a TV series that aired on The WB. Buffy the Vampire Slayer lasted for five seasons (1997-2001) on The WB and two additional seasons on UPN (2001-2003), concluding with seven seasons and 144 episodes.
“I feel incredibly fortunate to be on this journey alongside these four exceptionally talented women, who all cherish Buffy as much as I do,” Gellar concluded. “And as much as you do. Thank you to all the fans who have persistently advocated for this. This will be for you.”
