Tom Cruise endangers himself in the latest stunt for Mission: Impossible 8. In other developments, the sky remains blue, and the grass is still green. As the biggest movie star in Hollywood, Cruise has established his reputation by performing some of the most astonishing stunts in cinematic history. Over the past ten years, he has executed a halo jump in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, piloted various aircraft in Top Gun: Maverick, and ridden a motorcycle off a cliff in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning.
For his next stunt, Cruise will dangle upside down from a biplane in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. In clips posted on Cruise’s social media, the 62-year-old can be seen hanging from a biplane while director Christopher McQuarrie reviews footage on a monitor. This stunt is expected to appear in the upcoming trailer for Mission: Impossible 8, which is rumored to drop during Super Bowl LIX.
At the conclusion of Dead Reckoning, Ethan Hunt (Cruise) secured the cruciform key to the powerful AI called the Entity. In The Final Reckoning, Ethan and his team must find the sunken Sevastopol, a Russian submarine, and destroy the Entity aboard.
In addition to Cruise, The Final Reckoning features Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, and Angela Bassett. Will Mission: Impossible 8 mark Cruise's farewell? It’s rumored to be his last appearance in the franchise. When Empire asked him if this was truly the end for him in Mission: Impossible, Cruise chuckled and replied, “You gotta see the movie.”
McQuarrie also stayed ambiguous when questioned about whether this would be Cruise’s final film as Ethan Hunt, although he hinted that The Final Reckoning would conclude Cruise’s three-decade journey with the character. “I hope it's a satisfying conclusion to a 30-year story arc,” McQuarrie stated. “I’m fairly confident that audiences will agree with the title's appropriateness.”
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning will premiere in theaters on May 23, 2025.

Tom Cruise shouldn’t bear all the responsibility for his career resurgence.
Few actors hold as much power or affection in Hollywood as Tom Cruise. The success of films such as Mission: Impossible — Fallout and Top Gun: Maverick has positioned Cruise as a quasi-self-appointed advocate for cinema. In a time when Hollywood seems desperate for movie stars, Cruise is notably one of the rare actors capable of drawing large crowds to theaters for his films.
Cruise has undoubtedly secured his place as an industry leader. Most of the acclaimed films he's participated in over the last decade have leaned on both his natural star presence and his eagerness to undertake the type of practical stunts that have historically made legends of performers like Jackie Chan and Buster Keaton. When audiences decide to watch one of his films, they are at least assured of a movie crafted with the intent to entertain. That is, frankly, increasingly hard to find these days.
With a little help from a familiar collaborator.
Nonetheless, it's important to acknowledge that Cruise's recent career revival cannot be solely credited to him. His return to the forefront of Hollywood has resulted not just from his own charisma and fearless spirit, but also his fruitful collaboration with writer-director Christopher McQuarrie.
