Apple Maps has begun featuring sponsored businesses at the forefront of search results.
Sponsored listings are currently being introduced, and Apple does not provide an option to disable them.
Apple Maps has begun to display sponsored businesses at the top of some search results within the U.S. and Canada, making a feature Apple announced several months ago now a reality for users.
Apple confirmed to 9to5Mac that the rollout commenced recently and will continue to expand in the coming weeks. The ads may show up on iPhones and iPads, appearing in search results as well as in Apple’s Suggested Places feature.
There is no option to turn them off. Apple states that ad interactions and location data are not linked to an Apple Account.
Where sponsored results are displayed
Paid listings can appear above regular results when Apple deems them relevant to a search. They may also appear in Suggested Places, providing businesses with an additional way to connect with users browsing local options.
These placements are clearly marked as ads. For businesses, the system is centered around actions like getting directions or making a call, making Maps a direct means to enhance visibility through payment.
Apple's stance on privacy
As it increases advertising in Maps, Apple emphasizes privacy. A person’s location and interactions with Maps ads are not associated with their Apple Account, and Apple asserts that personal data is not shared with advertisers.
Context still aids in determining which ads are displayed. Recent searches and local trends can influence which sponsored results are shown, but Apple notes that this activity is not used to create a personal advertising profile linked to a specific account.
Changes for Maps users
The biggest alteration is how users interpret the results page. The first business displayed may now have secured its placement through payment rather than through organic ranking in Apple Maps.
This change is easy to overlook if users habitually regard the first result as the most reliable recommendation. Although the ad label is present, the ranking now combines paid visibility with standard search results, so users might find it more beneficial to check the listings below the sponsored entry.
This does not inherently diminish the usefulness of the result, and the ad label should clarify the difference. However, the top position in Apple Maps now raises an additional question worth considering before selecting it.
