Google Home has finally improved its cumbersome voice commands, but the majority of users still cannot access them.

The most sought-after fixes remain a feature of the early access program.

Google has released a genuinely beneficial update for Google Home, focused on the voice command function, but there is a catch hidden in the details.

The latest update enables users to specify an exact light color using Kelvin values (or color temperature), addressing years of awkward broadcast commands. However, very little of this functionality is available unless you’ve enrolled in the early access program.

So, what are the actual enhancements to voice commands?

In my view, the ability to control color temperature is the most prominent improvement. You can instruct Gemini with something like “set the living room lights to 2700 Kelvins” to achieve that precise warmth. This update simplifies the process of adjusting a slider in the Google Home app into a voice command.

However, I am concerned that general users will need to memorize the Kelvin values that correspond with their preferred color temperatures. To provide some reference, 3000K is warm, 4000K is neutral or room-like, and anything above 5000K is cool.

Additionally, requests for Spotify have also been refined. Google states it has enhanced the way it recognizes songs, artists, and playlists when asked by name, which is expected to improve voice search results. Another significant update concerns how broadcasting messages operates.

The new update effectively divides the process into two steps. You must first say “OK Google, broadcast message,” and then deliver the actual message shortly afterward. This allows for a more natural speaking rhythm instead of forcing everything into a single breath.

How can you access these features?

All three upgrades are specifically available within Gemini for Home, which is still in the early access phase. If you are not participating in that program, these voice changes will not be available to you, regardless of whether you have the latest app.

The good news is that everyone still benefits from a few improvements. Android live streams that previously got stuck at 360p can now stream in full resolution. European-style smart locks now feature independent unlatch and unlock controls, along with clearer status labels.

Finally, temperature units now maintain consistency across the app, voice commands, and the Nest devices themselves.
