**Quick Summary**
Typically, I tend to recommend Apple, Sony, and Bose when asked for premium earbuds. However, I now include Huawei in that mix. For the past four weeks, I've been using the Huawei FreeBuds Pro 5, testing them against the AirPods Pro (3rd gen) and Sony WH-1000XM6, which I keep on hand for high-end comparisons. Many audio brands tout “premium value,” but very few actually deliver on it—this situation is one of the rare exceptions.
Priced around $220 to $240 (€199 / £179), the FreeBuds Pro 5 are significantly cheaper than their Apple, Sony, and Bose counterparts. In most criteria I assess earbuds by, they rival or surpass some of the flagship models. Their standout attributes for me are a remarkable fit and impressive sound quality. These are some of the most comfortable earbuds I've tried, with a lightweight, pressure-free design that allows for long listening sessions and extended flights when I typically resort to over-ear headphones.
The acoustic setup combines a dynamic woofer and a micro-planar tweeter. According to my own experience, and corroborated by several others who tested them, this combination yields rich, precise bass and clear, detailed treble. Additionally, the dual-engine AI Active Noise Cancellation and Bluetooth 6.0 consistently performed well, effectively isolating noise and maintaining a stable connection. With all these features combined, the value is hard to overlook.
However, they do come with some drawbacks. Currently, they are only available in the US via third-party importers, and Android users face an annoying challenge with app installation as it's not available on the Google Play Store. I had to navigate this issue myself. Furthermore, the best high-resolution audio codecs (L2HC 4.0) are restricted to Huawei devices, making them more or less irrelevant for most users. Despite these shortcomings, I confidently recommend these earbuds for anyone seeking flagship sound quality and noise isolation without the flagship price tag.
