Microsoft aims to enhance Windows 11's right-click menu to function more effectively, providing users with greater control.

      One of the primary criticisms of Windows 11 since its release has been the sluggish and cluttered right-click menu. Now, Microsoft seems poised to finally tackle these problems. A recent report from Windows Central indicates that the company is undertaking a significant redesign of Windows 11’s context menu, introducing a new compact format that is not only quicker to load but also entirely customizable. This redesign is believed to be part of Microsoft's larger Windows K2 initiative, which aims to enhance the performance, consistency, and overall user experience of the operating system.

      A quicker menu with reduced clutter

      The existing context menu in Windows 11 has gradually become overloaded with shortcuts from both Microsoft and third-party applications, often taking a noticeable amount of time to display when users right-click within File Explorer. The report states that Microsoft’s new compact menu will focus on frequently used actions, reducing the need to load all third-party extensions in advance, thus making it considerably faster and more responsive.

      Perhaps the most significant change is the customization feature. Reportedly, users will be able to select which apps and actions are shown in the compact menu, hide items they never use, and even rearrange their order. A new “Customize” option at the bottom of the context menu is said to provide access to these controls, granting users much more flexibility compared to the current uniform approach.

      This redesign is also in line with previous statements made by Microsoft. Earlier this year, Marcus Ash, the VP of Design and Research for Windows and Devices at Microsoft, mentioned that the company was working towards making context menus “faster, simpler by default, configurable to what you use most,” with more information expected in the future.

      A component of Microsoft’s broader Windows revamp

      The updated context menu is reportedly just one of many usability enhancements planned under the Windows K2 initiative. Microsoft is also transitioning more elements of Windows to WinUI, a move designed to improve consistency and responsiveness throughout the operating system. Windows Central indicates that the new context menu is already functional internally, although Microsoft has yet to announce when it will start rolling out to Windows Insiders or regular users.

      While it may not be the most eye-catching Windows update, it could prove to be one of the most valued. The right-click menu is a feature utilized by millions on a daily basis, and enhancing its speed, cleanliness, and customization could significantly alleviate one of Windows 11’s most persistent frustrations.
