Motorola might have created the iPad alternative that Android users have been longing for.

Motorola has announced the Moto Pad 70, a new mid-range Android tablet featuring a large display, stylus compatibility, 5G connectivity, and a significant battery capacity.

The tablet is set to debut in India on August 8 via Flipkart. Its 12.1-inch 2.5K display, included Moto Pen, 10,200mAh battery, and 68W charging provide numerous appealing features for those considering Apple's base iPad. However, the mid-range Dimensity 6400 processor suggests it may not compete with the iPad in terms of raw power.

Could this be a budget-friendly iPad alternative?

Motorola seems to focus on offering good value rather than sheer processing prowess. The 12.1-inch screen surpasses the size of the display on Apple's standard iPad, and with support for up to 800 nits of brightness and wide DCI-P3 color coverage, it is positioned well for streaming, reading, and creative tasks.

The included Moto Pen enhances the tablet's value proposition. It features pressure sensitivity, tilt detection, and palm rejection, providing users a complete setup for note-taking and drawing without the need for an additional purchase. Additionally, Motorola will provide a magnetic keyboard case suitable for writing and basic office tasks.

A 10,200mAh battery should enable prolonged usage during viewing or study sessions, while 68W charging is notably quick for a tablet in this segment. Motorola has managed to deliver this in a 6.29mm-thin body weighing 530 grams, ensuring the substantial battery doesn’t add excessive bulk. The inclusion of quad speakers with Dolby Atmos and 5G connectivity further enhances its appeal as an entertainment device.

Performance is where the Pad 70 falls short

The Dimensity 6400 processor should suffice for browsing, streaming, video calls, note-taking, and general multitasking. However, it may have difficulty competing with Apple’s chips when it comes to demanding games, video editing, creative applications, and intensive workloads.

Motorola also commits to only two major Android updates, although security updates will be available until 2030. The Moto Pad 70 shares similarities with the Lenovo Idea Tab Plus, which was released last September for about 300 euros. Given that Indian pricing often trends lower than what direct conversions imply, Motorola might be able to price it advantageously below the base iPad.

With the right pricing, its large screen, included stylus, 5G support, and rapid charging could make its performance compromises more acceptable. As of now, it remains uncertain whether the company intends to launch this tablet outside of India.
