Google has confirmed that the prices of the Pixel 11 will increase due to rising RAM costs.
The RAM crisis may finally compel Android to enhance its efficiency.
Google has announced that the forthcoming Pixel 11 series will experience price hikes, attributing this to a significant, supplier-induced memory shortage.
In an interview with 9to5Google, Shakil Barkat, Google’s Vice President of Devices and Services, stated that memory prices have escalated to unprecedented levels within the industry. He referenced data from Morgan Stanley indicating that the price of 1GB of RAM has surged from $2.80 in 2025 to $12 this year.
Google notes that it has managed these increased costs for as long as possible, but it can no longer absorb them without passing the burden onto consumers. Consequently, price adjustments will affect the entire Pixel lineup, including the Pixel 11 series. Specific prices will be unveiled during Google’s event on August 12.
Previously leaked pricing for the Pixel 11 now seems more plausible.
Earlier leaks indicated that the Pixel 11 and Pixel 11 Pro could have starting prices that are $100 above their predecessors. Additionally, the phones are anticipated to upgrade from 128GB to 256GB of base storage, which may help mitigate the higher starting price.
The Pixel 11 Pro XL and Pixel 11 Pro Fold seem less adaptable, with leaked pricing suggesting a clear $100 increase. The base model of the Pixel 11 Pro may also see a reduction in RAM from 16GB to 12GB as Google seeks to manage component expenses. Additionally, existing Pixel models might also become pricier, though the company has yet to specify which models will be impacted.
Could Android finally optimize its use of RAM?
There might be a silver lining to the rising memory prices. Google has initiated a focused effort to decrease the RAM requirements of Android and the broader app environment.
Apple has consistently benefited from its ability to govern both the hardware and software in its devices, allowing iPhones to perform efficiently with less memory compared to many Android competitors. Conversely, Android must accommodate a much broader array of devices, chipsets, and manufacturer software, complicating such optimization efforts.
Google is optimistic that its control over Android, Tensor processors, and on-device AI will enable apps to load and function more efficiently. As a result, future Pixel phones may provide a similar user experience with reduced RAM requirements. However, it remains uncertain if these enhancements will extend to devices using Samsung’s One UI, Oppo’s ColorOS, Xiaomi’s HyperOS, and other Android variants.
The aspiration for ultra-affordable phones for children and seniors is essentially extinguished due to AI.
The demand from AI for memory chips has rendered budget smartphones nearly unfeasible to produce. The $100 phone you intended to buy for your child's first device or pass down to a grandparent might soon become an unattainable wish.
How severe is the situation?
Apple is set to launch its new Upgrade program on Tuesday, introducing significant modifications.
Apple's new leasing scheme might exclude AppleCare coverage from the bundled offering.
Purchasing your next Apple device might soon resemble leasing a car. Apple is rolling out its new Upgrade program on Tuesday, July 28, which will replace the existing iPhone Upgrade Program for new enrollments with a lease-based alternative that encompasses iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches.
Supported by Klarna, the program aims to reduce the upfront costs associated with Apple’s premium products, but it raises questions regarding whether you will actually possess what you are funding.

A phone stand is a minor expense on any back-to-school checklist, but it’s also one of the easiest items to misjudge, especially with countless options available on Amazon. An effective phone stand serves its purpose well and, importantly, doesn’t significantly impact your budget.
This is one product category where big spending isn’t necessary unless a MagSafe dock or multi-device charging station is genuinely advantageous for your desk or dorm setup. That's why this list starts with the most economical options and progresses to pricier choices. From a two-pack priced similarly to a coffee to a three-in-one Apple charging station, I've curated eight of Amazon's highest-rated phone stands worth considering this back-to-school season.
