Intel has advanced the timeline for its next-generation 14A (1.4-nanometer) manufacturing process, establishing an important new goal for its foundry turnaround.
During Intel’s Q2 2026 earnings call, CEO Lip-Bu Tan announced that risk production for internal products using 14A is now slated for the second half of 2027, with high-volume production expected to commence in 2028. This marks an earlier schedule compared to the previous expectations, which anticipated risk production beginning in 2028 and volume production starting in 2029.
What is driving Intel's increased confidence in 14A?
Intel states that the development of 14A is progressing more positively than 18A (1.8-nanometer) did at the same point in its development. The company asserts that the new process is ahead in terms of defect density and transistor performance, both of which are crucial for chip quality and manufacturing yields.
The 14A process design kit, which provides essential tools for companies to design chips for this node, has reached version 0.5. Intel indicates that version 0.9 is on track for release in October as they continue to prepare the technology for both internal products and external customers. Tan also mentioned that Intel anticipates 14A to be competitive in performance, power efficiency, transistor density, cost, and production timing.
Intel still has much to demonstrate
Intel reports that its current manufacturing processes are also making gains. Intel 7, Intel 3, and Intel 18A all surpassed internal volume goals during the quarter. The company has also begun risk production of the improved 18A-P variant.
This accelerated timeline could aid Intel in attracting more clients to its foundry services. Reports suggest that Apple has considered using Intel for some upcoming chip production, while AMD is reportedly planning Zen 7 processors based on TSMC’s competing A14 process.
Though Intel’s schedule appears more competitive now, the company still requires favorable yields, significant customer orders, and dependable mass production. Achieving these goals will determine if 14A becomes a real success in the foundry market.
