Following four generations of stagnation in camera technology, the Galaxy S27 may finally introduce a new main sensor.

      Samsung may be ready to move away from its long-standing practice of reusing the same main camera hardware on its standard Galaxy S phones, which was first introduced with the Galaxy S22. According to GalaxyClub, some prototypes of the Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27+ are undergoing tests with a new 50MP Sony sensor for the main camera.

      This shift would mark a departure from Samsung’s established preference for its own ISOCELL hardware in the primary cameras of Galaxy S devices, even if the resolution remains the same.

      What changes might occur with the main camera?

      The Galaxy S27 and S27+ are still anticipated to utilize a 50MP main camera, but megapixels alone don't tell the whole story. A newer Sony sensor could capture more light, enhance dynamic range, minimize noise, and provide Samsung’s image processing with superior raw data.

      Samsung has succeeded in enhancing photo quality through various generations by utilizing better software, updated processors, and more sophisticated computational photography. However, there are limitations to what processing can achieve when the underlying sensor remains relatively unchanged. Thus, a new main sensor would be a welcomed improvement, especially considering earlier reports suggested the standard Galaxy S27 might again use much of the existing camera hardware.

      There’s no certainty yet that the Sony sensor will be included in the final models. Development of the S27 series is still in its early stages, allowing ample time for adjustments to these plans.

      What about the other cameras?

      While the main camera may be evolving, the ultrawide camera seems much less exciting. GalaxyClub indicates that the Galaxy S27 and S27+ are expected to retain a 12MP ultrawide camera. Samsung may be reserving the more significant upgrades for the pricier versions. Previous reports suggest the Galaxy S27 Pro and S27 Ultra could incorporate 50MP ultrawide and telephoto cameras, along with a new 16MP selfie camera.

      If these reports are accurate, the standard Galaxy S27 models could finally see an improved main camera while their secondary components remain largely unchanged. I will trust the switch to Sony once Samsung officially confirms it, but the rumor at least offers more optimism than facing another year with unchanged sensors.
