Xbox executives state that the resurgence of console exclusives has only just begun.
Gears of War E-Day and Clockwork Revolution are merely the initial entries in a larger strategy.
Xbox executives have affirmed that the return of console exclusives is just beginning. In a recent discussion with GamesRadar+, chief strategy officer Matthew Ball and chief content officer Matt Booty mentioned that two forthcoming titles are confirmed as permanent exclusives, with more being developed.
Leading the charge are Gears of War E-Day and Clockwork Revolution.
Xbox Game Studios has launched sixteen first-party games for the Series X, but only three of these have remained exclusive to the platform. Ball indicated that this trend will change, starting with Gears of War E-Day on October 6 and Clockwork Revolution slated for 2027.
Both titles are set as permanent exclusives, as specified by Ball, who noted that these two games will not be the last. However, he refrained from disclosing what might follow.
Fable and Halo will still appear on other platforms.
Not all upcoming Xbox titles will receive the same exclusivity. Fable is confirmed for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X on February 23, 2027, and Halo Campaign Evolved will debut on PS5 on July 28, marking the first time a mainline Halo game lands on a PlayStation console.
Ball explained that these releases are a reflection of commitments Xbox made to its partners and players prior to the shift in exclusivity strategy. Additionally, Call of Duty and other live-service games will remain multiplatform for different reasons. Microsoft had sealed binding agreements with Nintendo, PlayStation, and Steam during its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, ensuring the franchise stays accessible outside the Xbox ecosystem until 2033.
Booty recognized that the combination of exclusive and multiplatform releases has created some confusion among gamers. He stated that Xbox will accompany every future release date announcement with a confirmed list of platforms, aiming to simplify the strategy moving forward.
For those contemplating investing in Xbox hardware, the main takeaway is that exclusives are indeed returning, though not uniformly. Gears of War E-Day and Clockwork Revolution will not be available on other platforms, whereas some of Xbox’s most significant upcoming titles will. The divergence is rooted in prior commitments made before the strategy was revised, rather than a lack of dedication to exclusivity itself.
