Spotify has introduced a conversational AI that allows users to influence playback through voice commands.

TL;DR: Spotify introduced a conversational AI feature for Premium users in the US, Ireland, and Sweden, allowing them to control playback via voice or text. Additionally, managed accounts for children were extended to the free tier.

Spotify has rolled out a conversational AI capability that enables Premium users to interact through typing or speaking within the app to control playback, discover music, and review their listening history. This feature is being tested for users aged 18 and older in the US, Ireland, and Sweden on both iOS and Android devices. Users can request Spotify to “play some artists I haven’t heard before” and refine their requests with follow-ups like “add some Bad Bunny” or “make it more upbeat.” From the Now Playing screen, they can inquire about the inspiration for an album, its release date, or its genre.

This capability goes beyond just music; while users are engaged with a podcast or audiobook, they can ask about the individuals, narratives, and concepts behind the material. Since Spotify tracks playlists, favorite artists, repeat listens, and overall listening history, it can also answer questions regarding personal preferences, such as “When did I first listen to this song?” or “What genres have I been exploring lately?” This conversational feature is Spotify's most ambitious AI effort so far, making the app more interactive and user-friendly.

In a separate development, Spotify has expanded its managed accounts for children aged 13 and under to include the free tier in the US, UK, Australia, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. Previously, these accounts were only accessible through Premium Family plans. They provide young listeners with a dedicated space to explore music while allowing parents to manage content restrictions. Explicit content is blocked by default, accounts remain private and unsearchable, and video and Canvas visuals are turned off. Parents can also prevent access to specific tracks and artists.

This expansion of managed accounts reflects Spotify’s response to increasing regulatory demands concerning children’s online safety. After Meta implemented 13+ content settings across its platforms in June, the UK is preparing to impose a ban on social media access for individuals under 16. Spotify is proactively presenting managed accounts as a secure option for families rather than waiting for regulations to enforce such measures. The introduction of both the conversational AI and children’s features indicates a strategy to create a more personalized experience for users across different age groups, offering adults a voice interface and children a safe environment.
