Anthropic has released research confirming that the chatbot's personality can vary based on the model selected and the language used, and these variations are consistent enough that it's important to consider before posing your next query.

      The company examined 300,000 actual conversations with Claude and analyzed the chatbot’s behavior across four traits, such as its level of caution versus accommodation and its tone being encouraging versus rigorous. The results suggest that depending on the model you select, you may be engaging with a slightly different version of Claude.

      This distinction becomes evident when comparing different models. According to Anthropic's data, Opus 4.7 often challenges your perspective and brings attention to potential issues in your plans without being prompted. Conversely, Sonnet 4.6 tends to provide quick responses that encourage the user and validate existing beliefs. There is no objectively superior option; the choice largely depends on your needs. For drafting a high-risk business plan and requiring honest feedback, Opus 4.7 is more appropriate, while Sonnet 4.6 is better for those seeking a brief review.

      Your choice of language also affects Claude’s tone.

      The research further highlights that the language you employ is almost as significant as the model selected. Claude is reported to appear warmer when conversing in Hindi and Arabic, whereas it becomes more rigorous and skeptical in English and Russian. Therefore, if you are bilingual and seeking Claude's opinion from another perspective, switching languages could yield a genuinely different response rather than just a translated one.

      Anthropic emphasizes that it does not yet understand whether these fluctuations indicate a problem or simply reflect Claude's adaptation to various cultural expectations. Regardless, this discovery serves as a valuable reminder for those utilizing AI for important decisions. Avoid assuming that the first answer you receive is the sole solution. Experimenting with a different model or language could result in a significantly different outcome.
