      The tech industry’s delicate balance is becoming increasingly difficult with each passing month. Costs for components are rising, memory expenses remain unstable, and laptop manufacturers are struggling to manage consumer price expectations. Microsoft's newest Surface update seems to be a direct response to this challenge.

      The company has launched new base models of its 12-inch Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface laptop, providing lower starting prices while keeping the processor and storage unchanged. At first glance, this appears to be good news for those on a budget. However, a closer examination reveals a compromise that is hard to miss.

      The price has been sliced

      Rather than reducing the prices of existing models, Microsoft has introduced new configurations with 8GB of memory. This strategy enables the company to advertise lower starting prices while keeping the other hardware mostly the same. While it is a smart approach, it may not align with what customers were looking for.

      For casual users who primarily use their devices for web browsing, emailing, attending classes, or using Office applications, 8GB may still be sufficient. Nonetheless, memory tends to become increasingly important over time. As applications grow heavier and multitasking requires more resources, having extra memory becomes valuable.

      The AI club now has exclusivity

      The reduction in RAM brings another twist: these systems will not meet the requirements for Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft currently mandates a minimum of 16GB of memory for its Copilot+ certification, which means that purchasers of the new models will miss out on the suite of on-device AI features available on premium Surface devices.

      This aspect is arguably more significant. In the past year, Microsoft has positioned Copilot+ as the future standard for Windows PCs. Yet, some new Surface devices are being released without access to that future capability. To be fair, the flagship Surface models continue to start with 16GB of RAM. These new variants seem intended to offer a more accessible starting point rather than to overhaul the product lineup. Nonetheless, this shift reflects the current state of the market. As hardware costs increase, something must give. In this case, it was memory.

The Post evaluated models from OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude, DeepSeek, xAI’s Grok, and Gab’s Arya with a set of political questions designed to assess how these chatbots deal with controversial issues. The findings revealed that OpenAI’s model provided one-sided, left-leaning answers 80% of the time, while Google’s Gemini generally took a balanced approach, presenting both left and right perspectives in over 90% of its responses.
